This calculator estimates your score on the established Air Force PFA — a 100-point assessment of cardio, strength, and core, with the waist-to-height ratio as a pass/fail health check. The component weighting and the run, push-up, and sit-up anchors are official; the point curves are interpolated and the alternate events are modeled and flagged, so treat near-cutoff results with care. A new PFRA is rolling out in 2026 (see below). This is for general information only, not an official score. The events involve maximal effort — warm up fully, and stop immediately if you feel pain. Consult a healthcare provider before maximal fitness testing, especially if you have any heart, joint, or back condition, or have not been training. For official standards, refer to DAFMAN 36-2905.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates your score on the established Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA) — the version in use through 2025, scored out of 100 points across three components, with the waist-to-height ratio as a separate pass/fail health gate.

The Air Force is unusual: it lets you build your own test, picking one event from each component. For the runs, a faster time is better; for the push-ups, sit-ups, crunches, and plank, more is better. The calculator scores each event in the right direction automatically.

Step 1: Enter Your Details

  • Sex and age — select the scoring table (the PFA uses five-year age cohorts).
  • Your event and result for each of the three components, plus your waist and height.

The Components

You pick one option per component:

  • Cardio (60 points) — the 1.5-mile run, or the 20-meter HAMR shuttleHigh Aerobic Multi-shuttle Run: 20-meter sprints to a progressively faster beep. Three misses ends the test.. This is the highest-weighted component by far.
  • Strength (20 points) — 1-minute push-ups, or 2-minute hand-release push-upsHands lift fully off the floor at the bottom of each rep, removing momentum and demanding more strength per rep..
  • Core (20 points) — 1-minute sit-ups, 2-minute cross-leg reverse crunchesA core option that reduces lower-back strain compared with traditional sit-ups., or a timed forearm plank.

How Scoring Works

Each component earns points up to its cap (60 / 20 / 20). The scoring is front-loaded: meeting a component's minimum already earns most of that component's points, and the top of the range is compressed. One consequence is worth knowing:

Meeting the bare minimum on all three components totals about 74 points — one short of passing. You have to beat the minimums, not just meet them.

The Body Composition Gate

Body composition is checked with the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)Waist circumference divided by height. A ratio at or below 0.55 is considered low-risk. — your waist divided by your height. In the established PFA it is not scored; it is a pass/fail gate:

A waist-to-height ratio above 0.55 fails the whole assessment, no matter how strong the other scores are.

How to Pass

To pass the PFA, all three of these must be true:

  • A composite of 75 or more out of 100.
  • At least the minimum on every component (miss one and the test fails regardless of total).
  • A waist-to-height ratio of 0.55 or lower.

How to Read the Standards Table

The table lists one row per age cohort and shows, for each of your selected events, the minimum (component floor) and the maximum (full points). Your age row is highlighted, and any event marked ~ uses modeled values (see limitations).

The 2026 Transition

The Air Force is replacing the PFA with an updated PFRA, phasing in during 2026 with a diagnostic period before official scoring resumes later in the year. The main changes:

  • The 2-mile run replaces the 1.5-mile run as the primary cardio event (the HAMR remains an option).
  • The waist-to-height ratio becomes a scored 20-point component rather than a pass/fail gate.
  • The weighting reshuffles to roughly cardio 50 / WHtR 20 / strength 15 / core 15.

This calculator reflects the established PFA for now. The new PFRA's exact point tables and final weighting are still being reported inconsistently, so rather than ship guesses, the tool will be updated to the PFRA once those charts finalize.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • Weighting and primary anchors are official. The 60 / 20 / 20 split, the pass logic, and the 1.5-mile run / push-up / sit-up min and max anchors come from the official chart.
  • Point curves are interpolated. Between the minimum and maximum, scores are interpolated; the official chart uses finer, non-linear gradations, so a result near a cutoff could differ slightly.
  • Alternate events are modeled. The HAMR, hand-release push-ups, cross-leg reverse crunch, and plank use modeled age/sex anchors (marked ~est.) and are provisional — verify against the official chart.
  • WHtR is a gate, not a score in this established version, and altitude adjustments for runs above 5,000 feet are not applied.
  • Single-test snapshot. Warm-up, fatigue, footwear, and conditions all affect one trial. Retest under the same conditions to track progress.
