How the Strict Handstand Push-Ups Calculator Works
This calculator scores your maximum strict handstand push-ups (HSPU) — the most you can do in one unbroken set — against community strength norms for your sex and age. It's the pressing counterpart to the max strict pull-up test (pulling): together they bracket upper-body gymnastics strength. There's no weight, bodyweight, or 1RM here — you did the reps, so your number is the measurement. One thing to know up front: this is the softest-data test in the suite (explained below), so treat the tier as a rough guide.
Step 1: Enter Your Max Strict Reps
Enter the most strict handstand push-ups you can do in a single unbroken set. "Strict" means: kick up to a handstand (heels may rest against a wall), lower under control until your head touches the floor, then press back up to full lockout with straight arms — no kipping, no plate or ab-mat cushioning the depth. If you can't yet do one, enter 0 — that's a real and common result; most people, even regular gym-goers, can't do a single strict HSPU.
Why Strict, Not Kipping
CrossFit's competition standard is usually the kipping HSPU — a whip of the legs off the wall that drives the press, letting athletes cycle far more reps than they could strict. Kipping is a real skill, but it's a different test: it rewards timing and hip drive as much as pressing strength, and the counts aren't comparable. This calculator scores the strict HSPU because it's the cleaner measure of raw inverted pressing strength. If you can kip HSPU, expect your strict number to be much lower — that's normal, and it's why we test strict.
A Note on Bodyweight and Skill
Bodyweight isn't an input, but it matters: the HSPU presses your whole bodyweight overhead, so a lighter athlete has a real advantage. It's also skill- and mobility-gated — it needs overhead shoulder mobility, the balance to hold an inverted position, and comfort being upside down, on top of raw pressing strength. A strong presser who lacks the handstand position may score lower than their strength alone suggests.
Step 2: Match Your Reps to Standards
Your rep count is compared to standards adjusted for your sex and age, then assigned to one of five tiers (more reps is better):
- Low — Below the entry level. For most people this is 0 — not yet a strict rep, which is where the large majority sit.
- Intermediate — A first strict HSPU or two. Already ahead of most people — doing any strict HSPU is a real milestone.
- Advanced — Solid reps. The "good" range — comfortable, repeatable strict HSPUs.
- Superior — Well above average. Double digits (men) / high single digits (women) — a strong presser.
- Elite — Top of the range. A genuinely rare number of strict handstand push-ups.
At peak age, that puts the tiers at roughly 2 / 5 / 10 / 15 reps (Intermediate / Advanced / Superior / Elite) for men, and 1 / 3 / 7 / 11 reps for women. These shift down with age (below).
Why Age Matters
- Age — Inverted pressing strength-endurance peaks in the mid-20s to early 40s, then declines — and for a bodyweight movement it falls a bit faster than pure barbell strength, because relative strength drops (bodyweight often creeps up while muscle mass falls). So the rep standards are scaled down with age.
- An honest note on the age curve — There's no age-banded strict-HSPU dataset, so the peak-age rep counts come from the norms above, while the shape of the decline is borrowed from large-sample strength-decline data. Treat the age scaling as a rough model, not a measurement.
The Strict Handstand Push-Up
The strict HSPU is a vertical press done upside down: you kick up into a handstand (usually with your heels resting on a wall for balance), lower under control until your head touches the floor, then press back up to full lockout — using only the shoulders, triceps, and upper chest, with no kip or leg drive. It's one of the hardest bodyweight pressing movements there is, because you're pressing your entire bodyweight overhead while balancing inverted. It demands overhead shoulder mobility and midline stability on top of raw pressing strength, which is why it's far rarer than a pull-up: most people can't do a single strict rep, and even a handful is a strong result.
Why Women's Standards Are Lower Here
Like the pull-up, the HSPU shows one of the largest sex differences of any movement, because it depends on upper-body pressing strength relative to bodyweight — exactly where the average male–female gap is widest. So men and women are scored on entirely separate standards. But the bigger point for both sexes is how skewed the distribution is: a large majority of people — trained or not — sit at 0 strict reps, so the entry tiers are compressed near the bottom and doing even one or two strict HSPUs already places you well ahead of most. That's an honest reflection of how rare this movement is, not a quirk of the scoring.

It is not census data — it's a right-skewed (log-normal) model anchored to this calculator's own standards. Your marker shows roughly where your number sits and an approximate percentile.
Why There's No "Games" Marker Here
Some calculators on this site include a Games-level reference above the tiers. Strict HSPUs don't get one: CrossFit competitions test kipping HSPUs (or HSPUs inside a metcon), never a max strict set, so there's no clean, sourced "elite competition" strict number to cite. Rather than invent one, the Elite tier (~15 reps for men, ~11 for women at peak age) stands as the top of the scale — already a rare number of strict handstand push-ups.
Data Sources and Verification — and Why This One Is Softer
- No validated fitness-test norms exist — unlike the pull-up (which has President's Challenge and Marine PFT tables), the strict HSPU is too advanced to appear in standard fitness batteries. There's no authoritative dataset, which is the single biggest caveat here.
- Community sources, which diverge by population — Strength Level's HSPU-logging subset (people who already train it) medians ~12 (men) / ~9 (women), while reality-grounded coaching sources (Gravity Fitness) call "good" 5–10 (men) / 3–8 (women) and note most people can't do one at all.
- Anchored to the reality-grounded numbers — we set the tiers to the broader "good"-range figures rather than the specialist-logger medians, so a typical trained athlete isn't measured against people who specifically train HSPU.
- Strength-decline norms — the age-adjustment curve is borrowed from large-sample strength data.
How This Test Differs From the Barbell Calculators
- It scores a rep count, not a weight — no 1RM, no units, no bodyweight input.
- Sex-split, not flat — the male–female gap is too large to use one standard.
- Strict only — kipping is a different, much higher-count test.
- Softer data — community-only and population-dependent, unlike the norm-backed pull-up.
Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator is a rough guide, not a precise measurement. The honest limitations:
- The softest data in the suite — no validated norms, and community sources diverge by up to 2× depending on population. Treat your tier as a ballpark, not a cutoff.
- Heavily skill-gated and zero-inflated — most people, trained or not, can't do a single strict HSPU, so the distribution piles up at 0 and the entry tiers are compressed.
- Strict vs kipping — the standards assume strict reps; kipping counts are far higher and not comparable.
- Mobility, balance, and bodyweight all matter — overhead shoulder mobility, comfort inverted, and a lighter bodyweight all help, independent of raw pressing strength.
- Depth and lockout vary — a shallow head position (padding under the head) or a soft lockout inflates the count; these standards assume head-to-floor and full lockout.
- The age curve and distribution are modeled — both are illustrative, not measured on strict-HSPU athletes.
