How the Max Strict Pull-Ups Calculator Works
This calculator scores your maximum strict pull-ups — the most you can do in one unbroken set, dead hang to chin-over-bar, with no kip — against strength-endurance norms for your sex and age. It's the suite's first gymnastics test: unlike the barbell calculators, there's no weight, no bodyweight, and no 1RM estimation. You performed the reps, so your number is the measurement; this tool places it into one of five tiers.
Step 1: Enter Your Max Strict Reps
Enter the most strict pull-ups you can do in a single unbroken set. "Strict" means: start from a full dead hang (arms straight), pull until your chin clears the bar, lower under control to a full hang, and repeat — no kipping, no swinging, no momentum from the hips. If you can't yet do one, enter 0 — that's a real and common starting point, especially for women.
Why Strict, Not Kipping
CrossFit uses the kipping pull-up heavily — a whip of the hips that lets you cycle far more reps (a strong CrossFitter might kip 40+ but strict-press only 12). Kipping is a legitimate skill, but it's a different test: it measures rhythm, timing, and conditioning as much as pulling strength, and the counts aren't comparable person-to-person. This calculator scores the strict pull-up because it's the cleaner measure of raw upper-body pulling strength-endurance, and because the published norms are based on it. If you train kipping, expect your strict number to be a good deal lower — that's normal.
A Note on Bodyweight
Bodyweight isn't an input here, but it isn't irrelevant either: the pull-up is a relative-strength movement, so a lighter athlete has a real advantage at any given level of absolute strength. There's no bodyweight adjustment because the norms aren't split that way, and because CrossFit has no weight classes — but it's worth knowing that a heavier athlete hitting the same rep count is doing more absolute work.
Step 2: Match Your Reps to Standards
Your rep count is compared to standards adjusted for your sex and age, then assigned to one of five tiers (more reps is better):
- Low — Below the typical trained adult. Below roughly the 35th percentile. For men, fewer than ~5; for women, not yet a strict rep.
- Intermediate — Around the typical trained adult. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
- Advanced — Above average. Roughly the 65th–90th percentile.
- Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 90th–99th percentile.
- Elite — Top of the range. Roughly the top 1% — a genuinely large number of strict pull-ups.
At peak age, that puts the tiers at roughly 5 / 10 / 15 / 21 reps (Intermediate / Advanced / Superior / Elite) for men, and 1 / 3–4 / 8 / 12 reps for women. These shift down with age (below).
Why Age Matters
- Age — Pulling strength-endurance peaks in the mid-20s to early 40s, then declines — and for a bodyweight movement it declines a bit faster than pure barbell strength, because relative strength falls (bodyweight often creeps up while muscle mass drops). So the rep standards are scaled down with age.
- An honest note on the age curve — There's no clean age-banded strict-pull-up dataset, so the peak-age rep counts come from the norms above, while the shape of the decline is borrowed from large-sample strength-decline data. Treat the age scaling as a reasonable model, not a measurement.
The Strict Pull-Up
The strict pull-up hangs from a bar with an overhand grip and pulls the body up using only the arms and back — no kip, no swing, no help from the hips — until the chin clears the bar, then lowers under full control to a dead hang. It's one of the purest tests of upper-body pulling strength relative to bodyweight, and a foundational CrossFit skill: strict strength is what lets you later learn kipping pull-ups, chest-to-bar, and muscle-ups safely. Because you're lifting your entire bodyweight, the rep numbers are much lower than a barbell lift — a "double-digit" strict set is a genuinely strong result for most people.
Why Women's Standards Are Lower Here — and by More Than Usual
The pull-up shows one of the largest sex differences of any common fitness test. It depends on upper-body pulling strength relative to bodyweight, and that's exactly where the average male–female gap is widest — men carry more upper-body muscle and a lower body-fat percentage on average. The result is a big, real gap: a typical trained man does ~8 strict pull-ups, a typical trained woman ~2, and a single strict pull-up is a genuine milestone many women train months to reach. This is physiology, not a scaling choice, which is why men and women are scored on entirely separate standards.
It also means the female distribution is skewed: a large share of women sit at 0–1 strict reps, so the lower tiers are compressed near the bottom and any strict pull-up already clears the Intermediate bar. That's an honest reflection of the data, not a quirk of the scoring.
The Dashboard

- Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your rep count falls among trained adults of your sex and age.
- Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).
Where You Fall
The distribution curve places your rep count within a modeled, illustrative spread of trained adults of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It is not census data — it's a right-skewed (log-normal) model anchored to this calculator's own standards. Your marker shows roughly where your number sits and an approximate percentile.
Why There's No "Games" Marker Here
Some calculators on this site include a Games-level reference above the tiers. Max strict pull-ups don't get one: strict pull-ups aren't a standalone competition event (CrossFit tests them almost always as kipping, chest-to-bar, or inside a metcon), so there's no clean, sourced "elite competition" strict number to cite. Rather than invent one, the Elite tier (~21 reps for men, ~12 for women at peak age) stands as the top of the scale — already a rare, high number of strict pull-ups.
Data Sources and Verification
- Validated fitness-test norms — Strict pull-up standards from Topend Sports / President's Challenge and Marine Corps PFT tables anchor the tier boundaries.
- Community strength data — Strength Level and GainStrong rep distributions cross-check the percentiles for a trained-adult population.
- Strength-decline norms — The age-adjustment curve is modeled from large-sample strength normative data.
- Not the peer-reviewed CrossFit study — pull-ups aren't in it, so this test is norm- and community-based, and (as the banner notes) varies more by source than the barbell lifts.
How This Test Differs From the Barbell Calculators
- It scores a rep count, not a weight — no 1RM, no units, no bodyweight input.
- Sex-split, not flat — the male–female gap is too large to use one standard, so men and women have separate norms.
- Strict only — kipping is a different, higher-count test (see above).
- The Elite tier is the ceiling — there's no separate Games marker.
Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator is a guide, not a precise measurement. A few honest limitations:
- Softer data than the barbell lifts — strict pull-up norms vary noticeably by source and population, so treat the tiers as a solid guide rather than an exact cutoff.
- Strict vs kipping — the standards assume strict reps; kipping counts are much higher and not comparable.
- Relative-strength movement — bodyweight matters (a lighter athlete has an edge), but there's no bodyweight adjustment.
- Skewed female distribution — with many women at 0–1 reps, the lower female tiers are compressed near the bottom.
- The age curve is borrowed — from broad strength-decline science, not strict-pull-up data directly.
- Grip, form, and range vary — grip width, a true dead-hang start, and honest chin-over-bar depth all change the count; partial reps inflate it.
- The distribution is modeled — the "Where You Fall" curve is illustrative, not a literal census.
