How the Jackie Calculator Works
"Jackie" is one of CrossFit's classic benchmark triplets: a 1000 m row, then 50 thrusters at a light 45 lb (men) / 35 lb (women) bar, then 30 pull-ups — all for time. It touches three modalities in one short, stinging piece: monostructural (the row, roughly 40–50% of the clock), light barbell (the thrusters, meant to be fast and near-unbroken), and gymnastics (the pull-ups, a grip-and-lung finish). You performed the workout, so your time is the measurement; this tool places it into one of five tiers, adjusted for age. An Honest Note on the Data
Most calculators in this suite are built on a peer-reviewed study of the CrossFit population. Jackie is not in that study. Its tiers come instead from a large community percentile table (wodtimecalculator), where the "fitness level" figures map to percentiles: about 9:23 at the 50th percentile, 7:56 at the 75th, 7:02 at the 90th, 6:29 at the 95th, with regional-level athletes near 5:19. We've mapped those onto the five-tier scale (Elite ≤6:30, Superior ≤7:00, Advanced ≤8:00, Intermediate ≤9:30 at peak age).
What that means for you, honestly:
- It's solid community data, but not a controlled study. The percentiles come from self-logged times across a broad field, not a measured research sample. Treat the tiers as a good guide rather than a precise cutoff.
- The data isn't split by sex, and it looks male-leaning. A "regional" 5:19 is elite-male territory. Because the tiers aren't sex-split, women are effectively measured against a mixed, male-leaning field — see the next section.
- The 30 pull-ups are a skill gate. If you can't yet cycle pull-ups efficiently (butterfly or fast kipping), the finish will dominate your time — your result then reflects that gymnastics skill, not your rowing engine or barbell capacity.
- The percentile, distribution curve, and "conditioning age" are modeled on this table — read them as illustrative, not exact.
Step 1: Enter Your Time (Rx Only)
Jackie is scored in minutes and seconds — lower is better. The standards assume the Rx version: a full 1000 m row, 50 thrusters at 45 lb (men) / 35 lb (women), and 30 pull-ups (strict or kipping). Scaling — a shorter row, a lighter or empty bar, or banded/jumping pull-ups or ring rows — produces faster times that aren't comparable, so a scaled time scored here would read as artificially strong. If you scaled, treat your result as rough.
Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards
Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better):
- Low — Slower than about 9:30. Below the community median — usually a steady row plus multiple breaks on the thrusters and pull-ups.
- Intermediate — Roughly 8:00–9:30. Around the median of the Rx field; a solid, honest Jackie.
- Advanced — Roughly 7:00–8:00. An assertive row, near-unbroken thrusters, and efficient pull-up sets — faster than most (~P75–P90).
- Superior — Roughly 6:30–7:00. A hard row off the line, unbroken thrusters, quick pull-ups (~P90–P95).
- Elite — Under about 6:30. Top ~5% of the Rx field; competitive athletes go well under this. See the note below.
These band edges come from the community percentile table, mapped onto the five-tier scale and then adjusted for age.
What "Elite" Means Here — an Honest Caveat
"Elite" here is roughly the top 5% of the Rx field (about 6:30 at peak age), not the competitive ceiling. The very top of the sport is far faster: regional-level athletes finish Jackie around 5:19, and the fastest athletes dip under five minutes with an aggressive row, all 50 thrusters unbroken, and 30 butterfly pull-ups in a single set. Read "Elite" as "excellent for a serious recreational athlete," with real competitive Jackies sitting well below it.
Why Men's and Women's Standards Are the Same Here — and Why That's a Caveat, Not a Feature
Unlike Grace or Isabel — barbell-only sprints where a sex-scaled bar lets women reach essentially the same times as men — Jackie has a real sex gap. The 1000 m row rewards the power and mass men carry on average, and 30 pull-ups are a bodyweight pulling movement where men hold a clear advantage; the light thruster bar doesn't offset either. So men are genuinely faster at Jackie on average.
The tiers here are nonetheless set equal for men and women — not because the workout is fair across sexes, but because the community data isn't split by sex and appears male-leaning, and inventing a female offset without data would violate this site's data-integrity rule. The honest consequence: a woman hitting a given tier is doing better, relative to women, than the same tier implies for a man. If you're a woman, read your result as a strong showing and mentally shade it up a tier.
Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve
Jackie is a roughly six-to-ten-minute all-out effort — long enough to lean heavily on aerobic capacity, short enough that anaerobic power and lactate tolerance still matter. Both fade with age, so standards are scaled so an older athlete isn't measured against a 30-year-old's time.
The honest part: there's no age-banded Jackie data, so the peak-age cutoffs are the community percentiles described above, while the shape of the age decline is borrowed — the same anaerobic/conditioning-decline curve used for the other metcons (roughly 1% per year from the mid-30s, accelerating after about 70). Jackie is a touch more aerobic than a pure sprint, so if anything this curve is slightly steep for it; both the base cutoffs and the age shape are estimates, not measurement.
Why Bodyweight Isn't Used to Set Your Tier
Jackie isn't weight-adjusted: the tier depends only on your time. That said, bodyweight isn't neutral in this workout the way it is on a barbell-only sprint — the 30 pull-ups reward a strong relative (strength-to-bodyweight) athlete, while the row tends to favour bigger, more powerful athletes. Those effects partly cancel and vary by person, and with no weight classes and no bodyweight data for Jackie, the fair approach is a single time-based standard. Just know that a very light or very heavy athlete may find one movement easier and another harder than the tiers imply.

- Conditioning Age — the age whose typical Jackie time matches yours. Because anaerobic capacity peaks in the mid-20s to mid-30s, a time faster than any age's typical mark reads as "peak-conditioning level"; slower times map to an older conditioning age.
- Population Comparison — a modeled percentile: roughly what fraction of athletes in your age group you'd be faster than.
Where You Fall
The distribution curve places your time within a modeled, illustrative spread of athletes of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers, with faster times to the right. It's a visual sense of "how rare is this," not a literal population census.
Data Sources and Verification
- Community percentile table — Jackie's tier bands come from wodtimecalculator, whose "fitness level" figures map to percentiles (P50 ≈ 9:23, P75 ≈ 7:56, P90 ≈ 7:02, P95 ≈ 6:29, regional ≈ 5:19), mapped onto the five-tier scale.
- Cross-checked against coaching guidance — The bands line up with commonly cited targets (sub-7:00 as a strong goal, sub-6:00 as very good) and reported regional/elite times.
- Not the peer-reviewed study — Unlike the strength lifts, Jackie isn't in the CrossFit-population study; its data is community-sourced.
- Masters anaerobic-decline research — The age-adjustment curve is borrowed from established masters conditioning/aging data.
Limitations and Important Caveats
- Not sex-split, and male-leaning — The single biggest caveat: men and women share one set of tiers even though Jackie genuinely favours men (row + pull-ups). Women should read a given tier as a stronger result than it implies for a man.
- Community data, not a controlled study — Self-logged percentiles across a broad field, coarser and less precise than the study-based calculators.
- Pull-up skill gate — Efficient pull-up cycling can matter more than fitness; if you can't yet string pull-ups, your time reflects that skill.
- Modeled percentile and distribution — the percentile, curve, and conditioning age are illustrative estimates layered on the community data.
- The age curve is borrowed — from masters conditioning research, not CrossFit athletes directly, and slightly sprint-biased for a piece this long.
- Rx assumption — Standards are for the full 1000 m row, 45/35 lb thrusters, and 30 pull-ups; scaled versions aren't comparable.
