Data source note: VO2max is estimated using the sex-specific equations from the UKK Institute's own published research (Oja et al., 1991), verified here against the worked example in the Institute's Tester's Guide. The test's native output is a "Fitness Index" scaled against others of the same age and sex — but the UKK Institute distributes that calculation only through proprietary software it sells, and the index coefficients are not publicly published, so this calculator does not reproduce it. Instead, the estimated VO2max is classified against the same general adult norms used across this category (ACSM/Cooper Institute). The test is validated for ages 20–65 and is not recommended for highly trained people who do intensive aerobic training more than 5 hours a week — see the explanation for why.

This is a brisk-pace sub-maximal test, not an all-out effort, but it still elevates your heart rate substantially. How This Calculator Works

This calculator estimates your cardiovascular (aerobic) endurance using the UKK 2-km Walk Test, developed by Finland's UKK Institute for Health Promotion Research and now used in 22 countries. You walk two kilometres as briskly as you can at an even pace, then enter your time, finishing heart rate, age, height, and weight. The calculator estimates your VO2max, classifies it into a category, and computes your Fitness Age and an estimated percentile.

A Note on the "Fitness Index"

If you've taken the UKK test through a Finnish health centre or occupational health service, you may have received a Fitness Index — a score scaled so that 100 represents average fitness for your age and sex. That index is the test's native output, and it's what the UKK Institute's own materials report.

This calculator does not reproduce the Fitness Index, for a straightforward reason: the UKK Institute distributes that calculation exclusively through licensed software it sells, and the index coefficients are not published in the open literature. Rather than reverse-engineer or approximate a proprietary formula, this calculator uses the VO2max prediction equations, which the Institute has published openly in the peer-reviewed literature and in its Tester's Guide — and classifies that VO2max using the same general adult standards used across this site's cardio calculators. Your result will be directly comparable to the other tests here, though it won't match a Fitness Index number from an official UKK test session.

Step 1: Enter Your Details

  • Sex — the prediction equation is entirely separate for men and women, with different coefficients on every term.
  • Age, Height, and Weight — age enters the equation directly; height and weight are combined into BMI, which is also a direct input.
  • Walk Time — total time to complete 2 km, in minutes and seconds.
  • Finishing Heart RateThe UKK protocol specifies the mean heart rate over the final 30 seconds of the walk, which is more stable than a single instantaneous reading and less prone to the rapid post-exercise drop that affects tests measuring heart rate after stopping. — the average heart rate over the last 30 seconds of the walk. This is a more forgiving measurement than tests that require you to catch your pulse immediately after stopping, but it does need a heart rate monitor to do properly.

The Test Protocol

  • Setup: A flat, firm, smooth 2 km course — five laps of a 400 m athletics track is the standard setup. A heart rate monitor is needed for an accurate result.
  • Health screening: The official protocol includes a pre-test health questionnaire. This test is for adults with no illness or disability that limits brisk walking.
  • Warm-up: A few minutes of easy walking before starting.
  • The walk: Walk 2 km as fast as you can at a steady, even pace. Walking — not jogging — throughout.
  • Don't sprint the finish. The UKK Institute specifically lists an end-sprint as a cause of invalid results: it spikes your finishing heart rate without meaningfully improving your time, which distorts the equation in the wrong direction.
  • Record: Your total time and your mean heart rate over the final 30 seconds.
  • Cool-down: Walk slowly for a few minutes afterward.

Step 2: Estimating VO2max

The calculator uses the sex-specific equations developed by Oja and colleagues at the UKK Institute:

Men: VO2max = 184.9 − (4.65 × time) − (0.22 × HR) − (0.26 × age) − (1.05 × BMI)

Women: VO2max = 116.2 − (2.98 × time) − (0.11 × HR) − (0.14 × age) − (0.39 × BMI)

where time is in minutes (15 min 30 sec = 15.5), HR is your finishing heart rate in bpm, and BMI is weight in kg divided by height in metres squared. Independent validation studies report a correlation of around r = 0.85 with laboratory-measured VO2max, with a prediction error of roughly 4.6 ml/kg/min.

Step 3: Classifying Your VO2max

Your estimated VO2max is classified against general adult norms from the Cooper Institute's Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, as published in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (11th ed., 2021, Table 4.7) — the same reference table used by the Beep Test, Rockport Walk, YMCA Cycle, Queens College, Bruce, Balke, and VO2max Classifier calculators on this site. ACSM's seven published bands are merged into this site's standard five tiers using only ACSM's own boundaries, with nothing invented.

Who This Test Is For — and Who It Isn't

The UKK Institute is unusually specific about this, and it's worth repeating: the test is designed for adults aged 20 to 65 with no condition limiting brisk walking, and it is explicitly not recommended for highly fit people who do intensive aerobic training more than five hours a week.

The reason is structural. For a very fit person, walking 2 km — even quickly — simply isn't demanding enough to push heart rate into the range where the prediction equation behaves well. Their result gets compressed toward the middle, understating their real capacity. If that describes you, a maximal test like the Cooper run or Bruce protocol will give a far more accurate picture. This calculator will flag a warning if your walk time suggests you may be in that group.

How It Compares to the Rockport Walk Test

Both are sub-maximal walking tests that estimate VO2max from time, heart rate, and body measurements, and both suit similar populations. The practical differences: the UKK test covers 2 km (about 1.24 miles) rather than 1 mile, uses BMI rather than raw body weight, and measures heart rate during the final 30 seconds rather than immediately after finishing — which removes one of the Rockport test's larger error sources, since heart rate drops fast once you stop. The Rockport equation was validated on ages 30–69; the UKK on ages 20–65. If you're in your twenties, the UKK test's validated range fits you better.

Fitness Age and Percentile

Your Fitness Age is the age at which your estimated VO2max would be typical (mid-Average-band) performance for your sex. The percentile is a modelled approximation mapping the tier boundaries to assumed percentile positions, the same approach used across the other ACSM-classified calculators here.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • No Fitness Index. As explained above, the test's native age- and sex-scaled index is proprietary to the UKK Institute and is not reproduced here. A result from this calculator will not match a Fitness Index from an official UKK testing session.
  • Validated for ages 20–65. Results outside that range fall outside the equation's validated population and should be read with caution — the calculator will flag this.
  • Not suitable for highly trained individuals. The test systematically understates people whose fitness exceeds what a brisk 2 km walk can probe.
  • Pacing errors distort results more than on most tests. Because the equation weighs both time and heart rate, an uneven pace or an end-sprint can push your estimate in the wrong direction — the UKK Institute lists walking too slowly, sprinting the finish, unsuitable clothing, and careless preparation as documented causes of incorrect results.
  • Requires a heart rate monitor for accuracy. The protocol asks for mean heart rate over the final 30 seconds, which is difficult to estimate by hand while still walking.
  • Medications and stimulants distort the heart rate response. Beta-blockers and similar medications, as well as caffeine, compromise the accuracy of any heart-rate-based estimate.
  • BMI is a crude body composition input. Because BMI doesn't distinguish muscle from fat, a very muscular person may see their estimate pulled down by the BMI term without that reflecting their actual aerobic capacity.
  • Approximate percentile. As with the other VO2max-based calculators here, the percentile is a modelled approximation, not an exact population statistic.
