How the Single-Leg Glute Bridge Test Works

This calculator takes your maximum single-leg glute bridges on one leg and scores the result against posterior-chain endurance standards adjusted for your age and sex. Lying on your back with one foot planted and the other leg lifted, you drive your hips up to full extension and lower under control, repeating on the same leg until your form breaks or the glute gives out. It's a focused test of the muscles that extend your hip — chiefly the glutes, with the hamstrings assisting.

Why This Test — The Hip-Hinge Piece

The other lower-body tests in this category — the squat, reverse lunge, and wall sit — are all knee-dominant: they're driven mainly by the quads at the front of the thigh. None of them really challenge the back of the body. The single-leg glute bridge fills that gap. It's a hip-hinge / hip-extension movement that targets the posterior chain, so together with the knee-dominant tests it gives a more balanced picture of your lower body. Strong glutes matter for nearly everything — sprinting, jumping, lifting, and protecting the lower back and knees.

Scored Per Leg — and Why You Should Test Both

This test is scored on a single leg, which is deliberate. Working one leg at a time removes the chance for a stronger side to cover for a weaker one, so it's far more sensitive to a left/right imbalance than any two-legged movement. Enter your reps for one leg to get your tier — then run the test on the other leg and compare. A meaningful gap between sides (say, more than a few reps) is common and worth addressing in training, since posterior-chain asymmetries are linked to hamstring and lower-back niggles.

What Counts — The Bridge Standard

Lie on your back, one foot flat and close to your hips, the other leg extendedNon-working leg held straight out or with the knee bent to 90°, kept still. Don't let it swing or push against anything to cheat the rep.. Drive through the planted heel until your hips reach full extension — body straight from shoulder to knee — squeeze the glute at the top, then lower under control until your hips nearly touch the floor. Keep your hips level (no dropping to one side) and drive from the heel, not the toes. Partial or bouncing reps don't count.

Matching Your Reps to Standards

Your rep count on one leg is placed into one of five tiers for your age and sex. The tier boundaries line up with population percentiles like this:

  • Low — Below the typical range for your group. Below roughly the 35th percentile for your age and sex.
  • Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
  • Advanced — Above average for your group. Roughly the 65th–85th percentile.
  • Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 85th–95th percentile.
  • Elite — Top tier for your age and sex. Roughly the top 5% (95th percentile and above).

The tier floors are defined at anchor ages (18, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65) and interpolated for every age in between, so your exact age gets its own standard rather than being lumped into a bracket. Values past 65 are extrapolated and floored so the tiers never drop unrealistically low or cross over each other.

Why the Sex Gap Is Small Here

Like the other lower-body tests, this is one of the more sex-balanced assessments. Posterior-chain endurance is proportionally strong in women — the glutes and hamstrings are relatively powerful muscle groups across both sexes — so the men's and women's standards sit close together, much closer than on the upper-body pushing and pulling tests.

Why Age Matters

  • Hip-extension endurance peaks in the mid-20s. Rep counts rise through the late teens, top out around age 25, and then decline gradually — so the standards scale accordingly. Because the peak sits at 25 rather than 18, a strong result is matched to the mid-20s reference; the "Bridge Age" card reflects that.
  • The decline is gradual. The tiers simply shift down with age, so an Advanced result at 55 reflects the same relative standing as an Advanced result at 30.

A Note on the Data

A word on sourcing, which is a bit stronger here than for some tests. The single-leg bridge endurance test is used in physiotherapy and athletic assessment, and there's published work on how many reps healthy adults typically manage. The thresholds in this calculator are calibrated against those reference points and then interpolated for a smooth age curve — but they're still best treated as estimates rather than one official table, because protocols differ (leg position, tempo, and what counts as failure all vary). Read your result as a well-reasoned estimate, and lean on the test as a progress and symmetry tracker.

Why There's No Body-Weight Field

You'll notice this calculator doesn't ask for your body weight. That's deliberate. A glute bridge lifts only your hips and part of your torso — a partial, hard-to-pin-down fraction of your bodyweight that shifts with your leg position and setup. Multiplying bodyweight by reps would produce a confident-looking "load moved" number that isn't accurate, so we leave it out. Your score depends only on your reps.

The Dashboard

  • Bridge Age — The age whose typical performance your result matches. Because hip-extension endurance peaks in the mid-20s, a strong result maps to roughly age 25 rather than to 18.
  • Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your reps fall among people of your age and sex.
  • Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your result within a modeled, illustrative spread of people of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It's a normal (bell) curve fitted to this calculator's own tier floors and truncated at zero reps. Real rep counts are discrete whole numbers and tend to be right-skewed, so read this curve as a positioning aid rather than a literal picture of the population.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Tier thresholds — Estimated and interpolated across anchor ages, calibrated against single-leg bridge endurance references from rehab and athletic assessment rather than one single published table.
  • Age curve — Modeled on the well-established pattern of lower-body endurance peaking in the mid-20s and declining gradually thereafter.
  • Sex gap — Set narrow to reflect how evenly posterior-chain endurance is distributed between the sexes.

Limitations and Important Caveats

This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real performance depends on factors it can't capture:

  • Range and tempo change the count — short, fast, bouncing reps inflate the number. The standards assume full hip extension with a controlled tempo; compare like with like.
  • The hamstrings can take over — foot placement too far from the hips shifts work off the glutes and can cramp the hamstring, ending the set early for reasons other than glute endurance.
  • Left/right differences are the point — a single-leg score is only half the picture. Test both legs to check for asymmetry.
  • The norms are estimated — even with rehab grounding, protocols vary, so treat percentiles and tiers as well-reasoned approximations.
  • Bodyweight isn't scored — and can't cleanly be, given the partial load, so the score reflects reps alone.
