How the Push-Up Test Works

This calculator takes your maximum number of push-ups in a single non-stop set and scores it against pushing-strength standards adjusted for your age and sex. The push-up is the classic horizontal press — lowering and raising your bodyweight against the floor — and it's the most universal test of upper-body pushing endurance there is, needing no equipment at all.

The Horizontal Push — Completing the Pattern

Where the Pike Push-Up in this category tests the vertical (overhead) press, the push-up covers the horizontal press — pushing away from your chest. Between them, the two round out the pressing side of your training, just as the pull-up and row cover the two directions of pulling. The push-up leans on the chest, front shoulders, and triceps, with the core working to hold a rigid line throughout.

Two Versions — and Why They're Scored Differently

The most widely published push-up norms — from the ACSM and the Canadian fitness standards — use different variants for men and women, and this calculator follows that convention so the numbers stay grounded in real data:

  • Men — standard (full) push-ups, on the toes.
  • Women — modified push-ups, from the knees, as the default. This is the version the published women's norms are built on.

Because the two sexes are scored on different movements, the men's and women's numbers aren't directly comparable — a man's 30 standard push-ups and a woman's 30 knee push-ups aren't the same feat, and the tool doesn't pretend they are. Women who train full push-ups can switch the Technique selector to "Standard" for a more relevant score — but note that those thresholds are estimated, since published norms for women's full push-ups are scarce. The modified setting is the better-grounded choice; the standard setting is there for those it fits.

What Counts — The Push-Up Standard

Set up with hands about shoulder-width and your body in a straight line from head to heels (standard) or head to knees (modified). Lower until your chest nears the floorRoughly fist height off the ground, elbows bending back at about 45°. Going too shallow is the most common way to inflate the count., then press all the way back up to straight arms. No resting at the top, no sagging hips, no half-reps. Count consecutive full reps until you can't complete another with good form.

Matching Your Reps to Standards

Your rep count is placed into one of five tiers for your age and sex. The tier boundaries line up with population percentiles like this:

  • Low — Below the typical range for your group. Below roughly the 35th percentile for your age and sex.
  • Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
  • Advanced — Above average for your group. Roughly the 65th–85th percentile.
  • Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 85th–95th percentile.
  • Elite — Top tier for your age and sex. Roughly the top 5% (95th percentile and above).

The tier floors are defined at anchor ages (18, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65) and interpolated for every age in between, so your exact age gets its own standard rather than being lumped into a bracket. Values past 65 are extrapolated and floored so the tiers never drop unrealistically low or cross over each other.

A Note on the Data — Well Grounded

This is one of the better-sourced tests on the site. The push-up is a staple of standardized fitness testing, and the men's standard and women's modified thresholds here are calibrated against the published ACSM and Canadian norms. The one part that's estimated is the optional women's full push-up setting, which lacks a strong published table — it's flagged wherever it appears. Even the grounded numbers are best read as well-founded benchmarks rather than an exact census, since protocols vary a little on depth and cadence.

Why Age Matters

  • Push-up endurance peaks in the late teens. Unlike maximal strength, which peaks in the mid-20s, repeated push-up performance tops out young and declines steadily from there — the standards and the "Push-Up Age" card reflect that earlier peak.
  • The decline is gradual. The tiers simply shift down with age, so an Advanced result at 55 reflects the same relative standing as an Advanced result at 30.

Why There's No Body-Weight Field

You'll notice this calculator doesn't ask for your body weight. A push-up presses only a partial fraction of your bodyweight — roughly two-thirds on your hands in a full push-up, less from the knees — and that fraction shifts with your proportions and hand position. Multiplying bodyweight by reps would produce a confident-looking but inaccurate "load moved" number, so we leave it out. Your score depends only on your reps.

The Dashboard

  • Push-Up Age — The age whose typical performance your result matches. Because push-up endurance peaks in the late teens, a strong result maps toward that younger reference.
  • Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your reps fall among people of your age and sex.
  • Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your result within a modeled, illustrative spread of people of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It's a normal (bell) curve fitted to this calculator's own tier floors and truncated at zero reps. Read it as a positioning aid rather than a literal picture of the population.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Men's standard & women's modified thresholds — Calibrated to published ACSM and Canadian push-up norms, interpolated across anchor ages.
  • Women's full push-up thresholds — Estimated (published data is scarce), flagged wherever shown.
  • Age curve — Modeled on the established pattern of push-up endurance peaking in the late teens and declining steadily.

Limitations and Important Caveats

This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real performance depends on factors it can't capture:

  • Depth and cadence change the count — shallow or bouncy reps inflate the number. The standards assume full-range, controlled reps; compare like with like.
  • Variant matters — knee and full push-ups aren't interchangeable. Use the setting the norms were built for, and don't compare across the two.
  • Cross-sex comparison isn't direct — men and women are scored on different movements by design.
  • Women's full-push-up norms are estimated — treat that optional setting as a well-reasoned approximation.
  • Bodyweight isn't scored — the partial, position-dependent load has no clean figure, so the score reflects reps alone.
