How the Hanging Knee Raise Test Works
This calculator takes your maximum strict hanging knee raises and scores the result against core-endurance standards adjusted for your age and sex. Hanging from a bar, you raise both knees toward your chest — at least to hip height — and lower under control, no swinging, until you can't complete another clean rep. It challenges the lower abs and hip flexors to lift your legs while the rest of your body hangs, and it's the standard progression marker on the way to full hanging leg raises and toes-to-bar.
A Third Way to Test the Core — From the Bar
This is the category's third anterior-core test, and each comes at the core from a different angle:
- Hollow body hold — isometric, on the floor. How long you can hold one braced shape.
- Sit-up — dynamic, on the floor, anchored. How many flexion reps you can grind out against the clock.
- Hanging knee raise — dynamic, from a hang. How many controlled leg lifts you can do while supporting your own bodyweight, with gravity pulling straight down through the abs.
Hanging shifts the emphasis toward the lower abdominals and adds a real grip and shoulder demand that floor work doesn't. Together the three give a rounded picture; you don't need all of them, but each tells you something the others don't.
An Important Caveat — Grip Can Be the Limiter
Here's the honest catch with any hanging exercise: your grip and forearms may tire before your abs do. If your hands slip off the bar while your core still feels strong, you're measuring grip endurance as much as core endurance. That's why the standard here is a strict hang with no straps — it's the most honest, equipment-free version. If you use ab straps or hooksLoops that support your forearms so your grip isn't the limiting factor. They let the abs work to true failure, but change what the test measures — so a strapped score isn't comparable to a strict one. to take grip out of the equation, expect a higher number that means something different, and keep your setup consistent so your results stay comparable over time.
What Counts — The Hanging Knee Raise Standard
Hang from a bar with straight arms, body still. Without swinging or using momentum, raise both knees until your thighs reach at least hip height (parallel to the floor or higher), then lower under control to a full hang. That's one rep. No kipping, no swinging, no half-reps — if you have to generate a pendulum to get your knees up, the set is over. Count only strict, controlled reps.
Matching Your Reps to Standards
Your rep count is placed into one of five tiers for your age and sex. The tier boundaries line up with population percentiles like this:
- Low — Below the typical range for your group. Below roughly the 35th percentile for your age and sex.
- Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
- Advanced — Above average for your group. Roughly the 65th–85th percentile.
- Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 85th–95th percentile.
- Elite — Top tier for your age and sex. Roughly the top 5% (95th percentile and above).
The tier floors are defined at anchor ages (18, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65) and interpolated for every age in between, so your exact age gets its own standard rather than being lumped into a bracket. Values past 65 are extrapolated and floored so the tiers never drop unrealistically low or cross over each other.
Why the Sex Gap Sits in the Middle
Core endurance itself is fairly sex-balanced, but hanging adds an upper-body component — supporting and gripping your bodyweight — where the average difference between men and women is larger. So the sex gap here lands between the floor-based core tests (which are quite balanced) and the pull-up-style tests (which show a big gap). It's a genuine reflection of the hybrid nature of the movement.
Why Age Matters
- Performance peaks in the mid-20s. Rep counts rise through the late teens, top out around age 25, and then decline gradually — so the standards scale accordingly. Because the peak sits at 25, a strong result maps to the mid-20s reference; the "Core Age" card reflects that.
- The decline is gradual. The tiers simply shift down with age, so an Advanced result at 55 reflects the same relative standing as an Advanced result at 30.
A Note on the Data — Read This One
Being straight about sourcing matters. Unlike the sit-up or calf raise, the hanging knee raise has no established adult normative table — it's a training exercise rather than a standardized fitness test, and counts depend heavily on strictness, knee height, and whether grip or abs give out first. The thresholds here are estimated and interpolated: calibrated to be reasonable and internally consistent for a strict, no-straps protocol, but not lifted from a peer-reviewed source. We'd rather name that gap than present these numbers as more authoritative than they are. Read your tier as a well-reasoned estimate and lean on the test as a progress tracker — same strictness, same knee height, your own number climbing over time.
Why There's No Body-Weight Field
A knee raise lifts your legs, not your whole body, through a swinging arc — so there's no clean fraction of bodyweight to multiply into a "load moved" number. Reporting one would be misleading, so we leave it out. Your score depends only on your reps.

- Core Age — The age whose typical performance your result matches. Because performance peaks in the mid-20s, a strong result maps to roughly age 25 rather than to 18.
- Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your reps fall among people of your age and sex.
- Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).
Where You Fall
The distribution curve places your result within a modeled, illustrative spread of people of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It's a normal (bell) curve fitted to this calculator's own tier floors and truncated at zero reps. Read it as a positioning aid rather than a literal picture of the population.

- Tier thresholds — Estimated and interpolated across anchor ages for a strict, no-straps protocol; calibrated for internal consistency rather than drawn from a published table.
- Age curve — Modeled on the established pattern of this kind of performance peaking in the mid-20s and declining gradually.
- Sex gap — Set between the floor-core and pull-up tests to reflect the movement's mix of core work and bodyweight support.
Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real performance depends on factors it can't capture:
- Grip may be the limiter — a strict hang tests grip alongside core. Straps change what's measured; keep your setup consistent.
- Swinging inflates the count — momentum makes reps easier and less honest. The standards assume strict, controlled reps to at least hip height.
- Knee height matters — higher raises are harder. Pick a target height and hold to it.
- The norms are estimated — there's no authoritative adult table, so treat percentiles and tiers as well-reasoned approximations.
- Bodyweight isn't scored — the swinging leg arc has no clean load figure, so the score reflects reps alone.
