How the Waist-to-Hip Ratio Works
Your waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is simply your waist measurement divided by your hip measurement. It doesn't tell you how much fat you carry — it tells you where you carry it. Taking the Measurements — What Counts
Two tape measurements, both taken standing, relaxed, with the tape horizontal and snug but not compressing the skin:
- WaistThe midpoint between your lowest rib and the top of your hip bone — usually about level with the navel. Measure at the end of a normal breath out; don't suck in. — the narrowest part of your midsection.
- HipThe widest part of your buttocks. Stand with your feet together and keep the tape level all the way around. — the widest part of your buttocks.
Both measurements must be in the same unit — but since it's a ratio, it doesn't matter whether that's centimetres or inches: the units cancel out and the number comes out identical either way.
The Calculation
A waist of 85 cm and hips of 100 cm gives 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85. That's the whole calculation — the value's meaning comes from the category it lands in.
Your Result and Its Risk Category
The ratio is read against WHO thresholds, which differ by sex because women naturally carry proportionally more fat around the hips:
- Low risk — healthier, peripheral distribution. Men below 0.90 · Women below 0.80.
- Moderate risk — some central fat accumulation. Men 0.90–0.99 · Women 0.80–0.84. Often responsive to waist-focused lifestyle change.
- High risk — central (apple-shaped) distribution. Men 1.00 and above · Women 0.85 and above. Linked to raised cardiovascular and metabolic risk.
Treat these as zones, not hard lines: a man at 0.89 and a man at 0.91 aren't meaningfully different. The trend over a few weeks of consistent measuring says more than a single reading near a boundary.
Why It Matters
WHR is a stand-in for visceral fat — the fat packed around your internal organs, which is the metabolically active, higher-risk kind. Because it looks at fat distribution rather than total weight, it can flag risk that weight or BMI alone might miss: a person of "normal" weight who carries their fat centrally can still sit in a higher-risk band.
A Note on the Data
These thresholds come from the WHO's 2008 Expert Consultation and are widely cited in clinical and public-health screening — this is well-established, not improvised. That said, a few honest limits: the standard cutoffs are derived mainly from European populations, and some groups (notably South and East Asian) carry higher risk at lower ratios, so the standard numbers can understate their risk. The thresholds are not age-adjusted, and WHR doesn't measure total body fat — a lean person with an apple shape and an overweight person with a pear shape each tell only part of their own story. Use it as one screening signal alongside the others.

Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator provides a screening estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real risk depends on more than one ratio:
- Measurement matters — tape placement on the waist and hip changes the result; measure the same way each time.
- Population differences — the standard thresholds fit European-derived data best and can understate risk for some groups.
- Not total body fat — WHR describes shape and distribution, not how much fat you carry overall.
- Not age-adjusted — the same cutoffs apply at 25 and 65, though waist size tends to drift up with age.
- One metric among many — real risk also depends on fitness, diet, blood pressure, blood work, and family history.
