How This Calculator Works
This calculator estimates your cardiovascular (aerobic) endurance using the Queens College Step Test, a brief and widely-used sub-maximal fitness assessment developed at Queens College in 1972. You step up and down on a fixed-height bench at a set pace for 3 minutes, then your recovery heart rate goes directly into a validated regression equation to estimate VO2max — no lookup table or nomogram needed.
Step 1: Enter Your Details
- Sex — the formula uses separate equations for men and women.
- Age — used only to select your classification standards; see the note below about why age doesn't factor into the VO2max calculation itself.
- Recovery Heart RateCount your pulse for the 15-second window from 5 to 20 seconds after you stop stepping, then multiply by 4. The Test Protocol
- Setup: A 16.25-inch (41cm) step or bench, and a metronome set to 24 steps/minute for men or 22 steps/minute for women — the two sexes use different paces, unlike the YMCA test's single fixed cadence.
- The test: Step up and down for exactly 3 minutes using a four-count cycle (left up, right up, left down, right down), maintaining an erect posture and steady rhythm throughout.
- Immediately after: Stop stepping and remain standing.
- Measure recovery heart rate: Wait 5 seconds, then count your pulse for the next 15 seconds (the 5–20 second window), and multiply by 4 to get beats per minute.
- Cool-down: Walk or stretch lightly afterward.
Step 2: Estimating VO2max
Recovery heart rate goes directly into one of two sex-specific regression equations developed by McArdle, Katch, Pechar, Jacobson & Ruck (1972):
Women: VO2max (ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) = 65.81 − (0.1847 × recovery HR)
These equations correlate with directly measured VO2max at approximately r = −0.75 (negative because higher heart rate corresponds to lower fitness), with a retest reliability of r = 0.92 for the recovery heart rate measurement itself — meaning the test reproduces consistently even if the underlying VO2max estimate carries some error.
Why There's No Age Term in the Formula
Unlike the Rockport or YMCA Cycle formulas on this site, McArdle's equations don't include age as a variable at all — heart rate alone predicts the VO2max estimate. This is a direct consequence of how the test was developed: the original 1972 study validated it on college-aged participants, a fairly narrow age band. The formula has remained in wide use for general adult populations since, but its precision for people meaningfully older or younger than traditional college age hasn't been separately re-validated the way, say, Kline's Rockport formula was explicitly validated across ages 30–69. Age is used in this calculator only to select which classification bracket you're compared against — not to adjust the VO2max number itself.
Step 3: Classifying Your VO2max
Your VO2max is classified using the same source as the Beep Test, Rockport, Åstrand-Rhyming, and YMCA Cycle calculators: general adult VO2max norms from the Cooper Institute's Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, as published in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (11th ed., 2021, Table 4.7), merged into this site's standard five tiers using only ACSM's own published boundaries.
The Smooth Age Model, Table, and Chart
Classification standards use the same age-bracket structure as the other VO2max-based calculators here: anchored at 24.5/34.5/44.5/54.5/64.5/75, interpolated smoothly, with results past age 75 extrapolated beyond ACSM's published "70+" bracket. The table lists minimum VO2max per tier by age bracket; the chart plots the five tiers as bands across ages 18–89, with your result marked as a dot.
Fitness Age and Percentile
Your Fitness Age is the age at which your estimated VO2max would be typical (mid-Average-band) performance. The percentile is a modeled approximation mapping the tier boundaries to assumed percentile positions, the same approach used for the other ACSM-classified calculators here.
Why This Test Is Popular
At just 3 minutes plus a 15-second pulse count, the Queens College Step Test is one of the fastest cardio assessments on this site. It needs only a step and a stopwatch, and unlike the YMCA test's full 60-second recovery count, it's over almost as soon as the stepping stops — which is part of why it remains a staple in college kinesiology labs and quick fitness screenings.

Limitations and Important Caveats
- Validated on college-aged participants. The original regression equations were developed on a college-age sample, and the formula includes no age adjustment. Treat results for meaningfully older or younger adults with additional caution.
- Body proportions affect the result. Taller individuals with longer legs do proportionally less mechanical work per step than shorter individuals at the same cadence, which the fixed step height doesn't correct for.
- Assumes stepping and running have equivalent oxygen cost. The original formula was calibrated against treadmill-measured VO2max, on the assumption that a given heart rate response to stepping predicts the same VO2max as that heart rate would during running. This assumption doesn't perfectly hold for everyone.
- Precise timing of the 15-second count matters. Because the measurement window is specifically 5–20 seconds post-exercise (not immediately, and not a full minute), starting the count early or late shifts your result more than a small error would on the YMCA test's full-minute count.
- Moderate correlation with lab-measured VO2max. At r ≈ 0.75, this test's accuracy is a step below some of the other estimates on this site (Kline's Rockport formula, for comparison, correlates at r ≈ 0.88).
- Medications and stimulants distort the heart rate response. Beta-blockers and similar medications, as well as caffeine, compromise the accuracy of any heart-rate-based estimate.
- Approximate percentile. As with the other VO2max-based calculators here, the percentile is a modeled approximation, not an exact population statistic.
