Data source note: The beep test's own scoring formula (Léger, 1988) was validated for ages 8–19; adult use relies on a workaround (holding age constant at 18), and the age/sex level-based fitness tables commonly circulated for adults are not drawn from a published study. To keep every number on this page traceable to a real source, this calculator converts your level and shuttle to VO2max using the Ramsbottom, Brewer & Williams (1988) equation (validated specifically for adults, r = 0.92 vs. lab testing), then classifies that VO2max using general adult norms from the Cooper Institute's Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study, as published in ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (11th ed., 2021). These are population VO2max norms, not shuttle-run-specific norms — see the full explanation below for details.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator measures your cardiovascular (aerobic) endurance using the 20m Multistage Shuttle Run, better known as the beep test — a progressive running test used worldwide in sports, schools, and the military, in which you run 20 metres back and forth in time with a beeping audio track that speeds up every minute. You enter the final level and shuttle you reached, and the calculator estimates your VO2max, classifies it into a category, and computes your Fitness Age and an estimated percentile.

A Note on How This Calculator Differs From the Others

The 1.5-mile run and 12-minute run calculators on this site classify your raw result (time or distance) directly against published age- and sex-specific standards for that exact test. The beep test works differently here, for a specific reason explained below: there is no adequately sourced adult normative table for beep test level by age and sex. Instead, this calculator converts your level and shuttle to VO2max first, then classifies that VO2max against general population VO2max norms. Read on for why.

Step 1: Enter Your Details

The calculator needs four inputs: your sex, your age, the level you reached, and the shuttle (lap) you reached within that level.

  • Sex — selects which VO2max normative table you are compared against.
  • Age — determines the age-specific VO2max standards used to classify your result.
  • Level and ShuttleThe beep test audio announces your level and shuttle count as you run — for example, "Level 9, Shuttle 5" means you were on your 5th 20m lap of Level 9 when you stopped. — the last level and shuttle number called out by the audio before you stopped. Record the last one completed, not the one you were attempting when you failed to make the line.

The Test Protocol

  • Setup: Mark two lines exactly 20 metres apart on a flat, non-slip surface (an indoor court or gym floor works well). You'll need the official beep test audio track or app.
  • Warm-up: 5–10 minutes of light activity and some short sprints before starting.
  • The run: Start at one line. Run to the opposite line, timing your arrival to coincide with the beep. Turn and run back for the next beep. The interval between beeps shortens roughly every minute (each new "level"), forcing you to run faster.
  • Ending the test: If you arrive at a line after the beep sounds, you get one warning. If you fail to reach the line in time on the next beep as well, the test ends. Your score is the level and shuttle you last completed before that point.
  • Cool-down: Walk slowly for 5–10 minutes afterward.

Why This Calculator Doesn't Classify Your Level Directly

Most beep test calculators and apps show a fitness rating (like "Good" or "Excellent") based on the level you reached, broken down by age and sex. When this calculator was built, that approach was checked against the underlying sources and found wanting for adults, for three specific reasons:

  • The formula itself is a youth formula. Léger's original 1988 equation, which is what the test's audio track and level system were designed around, was validated on 188 boys and girls aged 8–19. For adults, the same study notes the equation "could be used keeping age constant at 18" — a workaround, not a purpose-built adult equation.
  • The common adult rating tables aren't from a published study. The most widely circulated age/sex fitness-rating table for the beep test (used by most calculators online) is explicitly described by its own source as being "based on data from the VO2max norms, the results of athletes and personal experience" — not a peer-reviewed or institutional normative study.
  • The one large, rigorously published shuttle-run dataset is for youth. Tomkinson et al. (2017) analyzed over 1.1 million shuttle run performances worldwide — but the sample is entirely ages 9–17. It doesn't extend to adults.

Rather than build age/sex tiers on a table that isn't traceable to real research, this calculator takes a different, better-sourced path: convert your result to VO2max using an equation that was validated on adults, then classify that VO2max using adult population norms that are from a large, published dataset.

Step 2: Converting Level and Shuttle to VO2max

The calculator uses the equation from Ramsbottom, Brewer & Williams (1988), published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, which was validated directly against adults (r = 0.92 correlation with lab-measured VO2max):

VO2max (ml·kg⁻¹·min⁻¹) = 3.46 × (L + S ÷ (L × 0.4325 + 7.0048)) + 12.2

where L is the level you reached and S is the shuttle number within that level. This equation is the one most current adult-facing beep test calculators use in place of the youth-derived Léger formula.

Step 3: Classifying Your VO2max

Your estimated VO2max is then classified using the same well-sourced general adult VO2max standards used across major fitness and clinical settings: the normative percentiles from the Cooper Institute's Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study (a cohort of over 80,000 adults who completed maximal treadmill tests with direct gas analysis), as published in the American College of Sports Medicine's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription (11th edition, 2021, Table 4.7).

That source publishes seven named bands (Poor, Below Average, Average, Above Average, Good, Excellent, Superior) rather than this site's usual five. To fit the standard five-tier format without inventing new cutoffs, this calculator merges adjacent published bands rather than creating new boundaries:

  • Low = ACSM's "Poor" + "Below Average" combined Two adjacent published bands merged into one, using the "Below Average"/"Average" boundary as the single cutoff.
  • Intermediate = ACSM's "Average" (unchanged) This tier matches ACSM's own "Average" band exactly, with no merging.
  • Advanced = ACSM's "Above Average" (unchanged) This tier matches ACSM's own "Above Average" band exactly, with no merging.
  • Superior = ACSM's "Good" + "Excellent" combined Two adjacent published bands merged into one, using the "Excellent"/"Superior" boundary as the single cutoff.
  • Elite = ACSM's "Superior" (their top band, unchanged) This tier matches ACSM's own top "Superior" band exactly.

Every cutoff value used is an exact published ACSM boundary — nothing is interpolated or invented at this step. The only change is which of ACSM's own boundaries this calculator uses to separate five tiers instead of seven.

The Smooth Age Model

ACSM's table reports data in six brackets — 20–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, 60–69, and an open-ended "70 and over." The calculator anchors the first five brackets at their midpoint ages (24.5, 34.5, 44.5, 54.5, 64.5), and anchors "70 and over" at age 75 as a representative point, then interpolates a smooth VO2max threshold for every age in between. Ages 18–19 are matched flat to the youngest bracket. For ages above 75, where ACSM's table provides no further breakdown, the calculator extrapolates by continuing the 60–69 → 70+ trend — treat results at very advanced ages as a rough projection rather than a directly published standard.

How to Read the Standards Table and Chart

The table lists one row per age bracket and one column per tier, showing the minimum VO2max to reach each level. Rows beyond the published range are marked with an asterisk. The chart plots VO2max against age 18–89 with the five tiers as colored bands, Low at the bottom and Elite at the top, all shifting downward with age. The dot marks your age and estimated VO2max.

Fitness Age

Your Fitness AgeThe age at which your VO2max would be considered typical (mid-Average-band) performance. Conceptually similar to the "Endurance Age" used in the 12-minute run calculator. is the age at which your estimated VO2max would sit in the middle of the Average band. If your VO2max is higher than typical for your actual age, your Fitness Age is younger; if lower, it is older.

Percentile Estimate

ACSM's table gives named bands, not a full percentile curve. As with the 12-minute run calculator, this calculator maps the tier boundaries to assumed percentile positions (roughly the 35th, 65th, 85th, and 95th percentiles) and interpolates your result along that scale. Treat this as a directional estimate, not an exact population statistic.

Why Cardiovascular Endurance Matters

VO2max — however you estimate it — is one of the strongest predictors of overall health and longevity available from a single measurement. The beep test's practical appeal is that it needs almost no space or equipment and scales naturally from recreational fitness testing to elite athlete screening, which is why it's used everywhere from primary school PE classes to professional sports team combines.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • VO2max classification, not level classification. Your category reflects your estimated VO2max compared to the general adult population — not your beep test level compared to other beep test takers of your age, since no adequate source exists for the latter.
  • Merged tiers. The five-tier system here combines two pairs of ACSM's original seven bands. The underlying cutoffs are exact and unaltered; only the grouping into five labels is this calculator's choice.
  • Age brackets above 70 are extrapolated. ACSM's data does not break down VO2max norms past age 70. Results for older users rely on a modeled projection.
  • Approximate percentile. The percentile is a modeled approximation based on assumed positions within the five tiers, not an exact population statistic.
  • Two layers of estimation.First, level/shuttle is converted to VO2max using a regression equation with its own margin of error (Ramsbottom's SEE is roughly ±3-4 ml/kg/min); then that VO2max is compared to population norms collected via a different test entirely (treadmill, not shuttle running). This calculator estimates VO2max from your shuttle run result, then compares that estimate to norms collected via treadmill testing. Each step carries its own margin of error, so treat your category as a reasonable ballpark rather than a precise measurement.
  • Motivation and pacing affect results. The beep test is highly sensitive to how close to genuine exhaustion you push yourself, and to familiarity with the turn-and-accelerate pattern. First attempts often underestimate true fitness.
  • Hard on joints. The repeated sprint-stop-turn pattern places more stress on ankles, knees, and hips than a straight-line run. Supportive footwear and a proper surface matter.
  • This is a maximal-effort test. It places significant demand on the cardiovascular system. It is not appropriate for someone new to exercise, returning from injury or illness, or with an undiagnosed heart condition without medical clearance first.
