How the Sit-Up Test Works
This calculator takes the number of sit-ups you complete in 60 seconds and scores it against core-endurance standards adjusted for your age and sex. It's the classic timed abdominal test — knees bent, feet anchored, curl all the way up and back down as many times as you can before the minute runs out. It measures the dynamic endurance of your hip flexors and abdominal muscles working together against the clock.
Sit-Up vs Hollow Body — Dynamic vs Isometric Core
This test pairs with the Hollow Body Hold, and together they cover the front of your core two different ways:
- Hollow body hold — isometric. You hold one braced shape until your form breaks. It tests how long your deep core can stay tight and stable.
- Sit-up — dynamic. You move through a full range again and again. It tests how many repeated flexion efforts your abs and hip flexors can produce in a set time.
Both matter, and they don't always track together — some people hold a rock-solid plank but tire quickly on reps, and vice versa. Running both gives a fuller read of your core than either alone.
What Counts — The Sit-Up Standard

Anchoring brings the hip flexors in and is the traditional timed-test setup, which is what these norms assume.. Curl up until your torso reaches vertical (or your elbows touch your thighs), then lower until your shoulder blades touch the floor — that's one rep. Count every full rep in 60 seconds. Partial reps or bouncing off the floor don't count. Keep the same tempo and form each time so your score stays comparable.
Matching Your Reps to Standards
Your 60-second count is placed into one of five tiers for your age and sex. The tier boundaries line up with population percentiles like this:
- Low — Below the typical range for your group. Below roughly the 35th percentile for your age and sex.
- Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
- Advanced — Above average for your group. Roughly the 65th–85th percentile.
- Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 85th–95th percentile.
- Elite — Top tier for your age and sex. Roughly the top 5% (95th percentile and above).
The tier floors are defined at anchor ages (18, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65) and interpolated for every age in between, so your exact age gets its own standard rather than being lumped into a bracket. Values past 65 are extrapolated and floored so the tiers never drop unrealistically low or cross over each other.
A Note on the Data — Better Than Most
Here's a welcome change from most tests on this site: the timed sit-up is genuinely well-studied. Versions of the one-minute sit-up appear in the ACSM guidelines, the old U.S. Army fitness test, the Canadian fitness batteries, and the President's Challenge, several with published age- and sex-based tables. The thresholds in this calculator are calibrated against that published data and interpolated for a smooth age curve. They're still best read as well-founded estimates — protocols differ slightly on anchoring, tempo, and what counts as a full rep — but the grounding here is stronger than for the more improvised bodyweight tests.
Why Core Endurance Peaks Young
Unlike the strength tests — which peak in the mid-20s — sit-up performance tends to peak in the late teens and decline steadily from there. Repeated trunk flexion leans on suppleness and relative core-to-bodyweight ratio, both of which favor younger bodies. The standards and the "Core Age" card reflect this earlier peak, so a strong result maps to the late teens rather than the mid-20s.
A Fair Word on Sit-Ups and Your Back
Worth being honest about: repeated full sit-ups load the spine in flexion, and some experts — most notably spine researcher Stuart McGill, whose core-endurance battery appears elsewhere on this site — argue that curl-ups and planks are gentler, back-friendlier ways to train the same muscles. The sit-up remains a valid, widely used test with decades of comparable data, which is why it's here. But if you have current or past lower-back trouble, treat this as an optional benchmark rather than a staple, and lean on the isometric core work instead.
Why There's No Body-Weight Field
You'll notice this calculator doesn't ask for your body weight. A sit-up raises your torso against gravity — a partial, leverage-dependent fraction of your bodyweight that can't be pinned to a clean number. Multiplying bodyweight by reps would produce a misleading "load moved" figure, so we leave it out. Your score depends only on your rep count.

- Core Age — The age whose typical performance your result matches. Because sit-up endurance peaks in the late teens, a strong result maps toward that younger reference.
- Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your reps fall among people of your age and sex.
- Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).
Where You Fall
The distribution curve places your result within a modeled, illustrative spread of people of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It's a normal (bell) curve fitted to this calculator's own tier floors and truncated at zero reps. Read it as a positioning aid rather than a literal picture of the population.
Data Sources and Verification
- Tier thresholds — Calibrated against published one-minute sit-up norms (ACSM / Army / Canadian / President's Challenge) and interpolated across anchor ages for a smooth curve.
- Age curve — Modeled on the established pattern of trunk-flexion endurance peaking in the late teens and declining steadily.
- Sex gap — Set narrow to reflect how relatively balanced core endurance is between the sexes.
Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real performance depends on factors it can't capture:
- Anchoring and tempo change the count — anchored feet and a fast cadence raise the number. The standards assume anchored feet and full reps; compare like with like.
- Hip flexors do a lot of the work — an anchored sit-up is as much a hip-flexor test as an ab test, so it isn't a pure measure of abdominal strength.
- Back comfort matters — if flexion bothers your back, your count will reflect that, not your true core endurance. Use the hollow body hold or a plank instead.
- The norms are calibrated estimates — grounded in published data but interpolated, so treat tiers as well-founded approximations.
- Bodyweight isn't scored — and can't cleanly be, so the score reflects reps alone.
