How the Reverse Lunge Test Works

This calculator takes your maximum number of alternating reverse lunges — counting every rep on both legs — in a single non-stop set, and scores it against lower-body endurance standards adjusted for your age and sex. You step back into a lunge, drop the rear knee toward the floor, drive back up, and alternate legs until your form breaks or your legs give out. It's a single-leg-dominant test, so it challenges balance and stability alongside raw leg endurance.

Why a Unilateral Test — Alongside the Squat

The bodyweight squat is a bilateral movement: both legs share the load, and a stronger side can quietly cover for a weaker one. The reverse lunge is unilateral — one leg does most of the work at a time — so it tests things the squat can't: single-leg endurance, hip and ankle stability, and balance. That's why it earns its own place in the category rather than being folded into the squat. If you want to check for a left/right imbalance, run the test one leg at a time and compare; a large gap between sides is worth addressing in training.

It's an Endurance Test, Not a Strength Test

Like the bodyweight squat, this is a test of local muscular endurance, not maximal strength. Rep counts run high, and the set ends on a mix of muscular fatigue, balance, and discomfort tolerance — so results can vary a little day to day with freshness and focus. Held to the same standard over time, it's still a genuinely useful measure.

What Counts — The Reverse Lunge Standard

From standing, step one foot back and lower until your rear knee nears the floorFront thigh roughly parallel to the ground, front shin near vertical, rear knee lowered under control to just above the floor. Shallow half-lunges don't count. and your front thigh reaches about parallel, then drive back to standing and repeat on the other side. Keep the torso tall and the front knee tracking over the foot. Count every rep on both legs — the calculator also shows an approximate per-leg figure. Shallow or bouncing reps don't count.

Matching Your Reps to Standards

Your total rep count is placed into one of five tiers for your age and sex. The tier boundaries line up with population percentiles like this:

  • Low — Below the typical range for your group. Below roughly the 35th percentile for your age and sex.
  • Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
  • Advanced — Above average for your group. Roughly the 65th–85th percentile.
  • Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 85th–95th percentile.
  • Elite — Top tier for your age and sex. Roughly the top 5% (95th percentile and above).

The tier floors are defined at anchor ages (18, 25, 35, 45, 55, 65) and interpolated for every age in between, so your exact age gets its own standard rather than being lumped into a bracket. Values past 65 are extrapolated and floored so the tiers never drop unrealistically low or cross over each other.

Why the Sex Gap Is Small Here

Like the other lower-body tests, this is one of the more sex-balanced assessments. Leg endurance is proportionally strong in women, so the men's and women's standards sit close together — much closer than on the upper-body pushing and pulling tests. That's genuine physiology, reflected in the numbers rather than smoothed over.

Why Age Matters

  • Leg endurance peaks in the mid-20s. Rep counts rise through the late teens, top out around age 25, and then decline gradually — so the standards scale accordingly. Because the peak sits at 25 rather than 18, a strong result is matched to the mid-20s reference; the "Lunge Age" card reflects that.
  • The decline is gradual. The tiers simply shift down with age, so an Advanced result at 55 reflects the same relative standing as an Advanced result at 30.

A Note on the Data — Read This One

Being straight about sourcing matters here. There is no established adult normative table for maximum reverse lunges — protocols vary in depth, cadence, and whether reps are counted per leg or in total. The thresholds in this calculator are estimated and interpolated: calibrated to be reasonable and internally consistent for a full-range, to-failure protocol counting total reps, but not lifted from a single peer-reviewed source. We'd rather name that gap than present these numbers as more authoritative than they are.

Read your tier and percentile as a well-reasoned estimate, and lean on the test as a progress tracker — same depth, same cadence, your own number climbing over time is the most trustworthy signal.

Why There's No Body-Weight Field

You'll notice this calculator doesn't ask for your body weight. That's deliberate. In a lunge, only part of your body actually moves, and how much load sits on the working leg shifts with your stride length and torso angle — so you're lifting a partial, hard-to-pin-down fraction of your bodyweight per rep. Multiplying bodyweight by reps would produce a confident-looking "load moved" number that isn't accurate, so we leave it out. Your score depends only on your reps.

The Dashboard

  • Lunge Age — The age whose typical performance your result matches. Because leg endurance peaks in the mid-20s, a strong result maps to roughly age 25 rather than to 18.
  • Population Percentile — A modeled estimate of where your reps fall among people of your age and sex.
  • Next Tier Target — How many more reps to reach the next tier (or, once you're Elite, a note that you're at the top tier for your age).

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your result within a modeled, illustrative spread of people of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers. It's a normal (bell) curve fitted to this calculator's own tier floors and truncated at zero reps. Real rep counts are discrete whole numbers and tend to be right-skewed, so read this curve as a positioning aid rather than a literal picture of the population.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Tier thresholds — Estimated and interpolated across anchor ages for a full-range, total-rep protocol; calibrated for internal consistency rather than drawn from a single published table.
  • Age curve — Modeled on the well-established pattern of lower-body endurance peaking in the mid-20s and declining gradually thereafter.
  • Sex gap — Set narrow to reflect how evenly lower-body endurance is distributed between the sexes.

Limitations and Important Caveats

This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Real performance depends on factors it can't capture:

  • Depth and cadence change everything — shallow or bouncing reps inflate the count. The standards assume full range with a controlled cadence; compare like with like.
  • Balance is part of the test — poor single-leg stability can end your set before the muscles are truly done, which is real information but adds variability.
  • Left/right differences are hidden in the total — a total count can mask a weaker side. Test each leg separately if you want to check for asymmetry.
  • The norms are estimated — there's no authoritative adult table, so treat percentiles and tiers as well-reasoned approximations and lean on the test as a progress tracker.
  • Bodyweight isn't scored — and can't cleanly be, given the partial, stride-dependent load, so the score reflects reps alone.
