How the Nancy Calculator Works

"Nancy" is a classic CrossFit benchmark couplet: five rounds of a 400 m run and 15 overhead squats at 95 lb (men) / 65 lb (women), all for time. It pairs two things that don't usually share a workout — sustained running and a high-skill barbell lift held overhead — so it tests aerobic endurance, leg and shoulder stamina, and overhead stability under fatigue. You performed the workout, so your time is the measurement; this tool places it into one of five tiers, adjusted for age.

One framing point worth stating plainly: with 2000 m of running (about 60% of most people's time) and only 75 total overhead squats, Nancy is as much a running test as an overhead-squat test. A strong runner with a passable overhead squat will usually beat a strong squatter who's a weak runner.

An Honest Note on the Data

Most calculators in this suite are built on a peer-reviewed study of the CrossFit population. Nancy is not in that study. Its tiers come instead from community benchmark data that agrees closely across sources (wodbase: Elite under 11:00, Advanced 11–15, Intermediate 15–20, Beginner 20–25; wodtimecalculator's average around 15:30; CrossFit.com's typical 15–18 with elites near 10). We've mapped those onto the five-tier scale (Elite ≤11:00, Superior ≤13:00, Advanced ≤15:00, Intermediate ≤18:00 at peak age).

What that means for you, honestly:

  • It's consistent community data, but not a controlled study. The bands come from coaching guidance and logged times, not a measured research sample. Treat the tiers as a good guide rather than a precise cutoff.
  • The data isn't split by sex, and it looks male-leaning. Because Nancy is running-heavy and the community bands aren't sex-split, women are effectively measured against a mixed, male-leaning field — see the section below.
  • The overhead squat is mobility-gated. If limited shoulder, thoracic, hip, or ankle mobility forces you to break sets or shorten depth, your time reflects that restriction as much as your fitness — and scaling to a front squat (a common Nancy modification) changes the workout entirely.
  • The percentile, distribution curve, and "conditioning age" are modeled on this data — read them as illustrative, not exact.

Step 1: Enter Your Time (Rx Only)

Nancy is scored in minutes and seconds — lower is better. The standards assume the Rx version: five full 400 m runs and 15 overhead squats per round at 95 lb (men) / 65 lb (women), squatting below parallel with a locked, active bar overhead. Scaling — a lighter bar, shorter runs, front squats, or rowing in place of running — produces times that aren't comparable, so a scaled time scored here would read as artificially strong. If you scaled, treat your result as rough.

Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards

Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better):

  • Low — Slower than about 18:00. Below the community median — often steady runs plus multiple breaks on the overhead squats, or a mobility limit that slows the bar work.
  • Intermediate — Roughly 15:00–18:00. Around the average of the Rx field; a solid, honest Nancy.
  • Advanced — Roughly 13:00–15:00. Purposeful runs and mostly-unbroken overhead squats — faster than most (~P75–P85).
  • Superior — Roughly 11:00–13:00. Hard, even running with unbroken overhead squats and brisk transitions (~P90).
  • Elite — Under about 11:00. Top ~5% of the Rx field; competitive athletes go well under this. See the note below.

These band edges come from the community benchmark data, mapped onto the five-tier scale and then adjusted for age.

What "Elite" Means Here — an Honest Caveat

"Elite" here is roughly the top 5% of the Rx field (about 11:00 at peak age), not the competitive ceiling. The very top of the sport is far faster: elite male athletes finish Nancy under 9 minutes and elite women just over 10, with fast, even 400s and every set of overhead squats unbroken. Read "Elite" as "excellent for a serious recreational athlete," with real competitive Nancys sitting below it.

Why Men's and Women's Standards Are the Same Here — and Why That's a Caveat, Not a Feature

Unlike Grace or Isabel — barbell-only sprints where a sex-scaled bar lets women reach essentially the same times as men — Nancy has a real sex gap. Two-thirds of Nancy is running, and distance running carries a well-understood sex difference (men average faster over 400 m repeats); the sex-scaled 95/65 lb bar narrows the overhead-squat gap but doesn't erase it. The reported top times reflect this: elite men go sub-9, elite women just over 10. So men are genuinely faster at Nancy on average.

The tiers here are nonetheless set equal for men and women — not because the workout is fair across sexes, but because the community data isn't split by sex and appears male-leaning, and inventing a female offset without data would violate this site's data-integrity rule. The honest consequence: a woman hitting a given tier is doing better, relative to women, than the same tier implies for a man. If you're a woman, read your result as a strong showing and mentally shade it up a tier.

Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve

Nancy is a roughly eleven-to-eighteen-minute endurance effort, dominated by 2000 m of running — so it leans heavily on aerobic capacity, which fades with age. Standards are scaled so an older athlete isn't measured against a 30-year-old's time.

The honest part: there's no age-banded Nancy data, so the peak-age cutoffs are the community bands described above, while the shape of the age decline is borrowed. Because Nancy is running-dominated, this tool uses the gentler aerobic (WMA-style) decline — the same curve behind the run and row calculators (about 0.8% per year from the mid-30s, ~0.72 of peak at 70) — rather than the steeper curve used for the short sprint metcons. Both the base cutoffs and the age shape are estimates, not measurement.

Why Bodyweight Isn't Used to Set Your Tier

Nancy isn't weight-adjusted: the tier depends only on your time. That said, bodyweight isn't perfectly neutral — distance running tends to reward leaner athletes, while the overhead squat rewards a strong relative (strength-to-bodyweight) athlete with good positions. With no weight classes and no bodyweight data for Nancy, a single time-based standard is the fair approach; just know a very light or very heavy athlete may find the running or the barbell relatively easier than the tiers imply.

Limitations and Important Caveats
