How the 1,000 m Row Calculator Works
The 1,000 m row is the erg's middle distance — a roughly 3-to-3.5-minute effort that sits between the 500 m sprint and the 2,000 m. It's a genuinely mixed test: fast enough to be brutally anaerobic, long enough that your aerobic engine and lactate tolerance decide the back half. It gained popularity as a main event at the 2020 CrossFit Games. This calculator takes your 1k time, compares it to standards by sex and age, and places you in one of five tiers. There's no formula — you rowed it, so your time is the measurement. As with the other rows, these standards come from the rowing world, not the CrossFit study (see the data note below).
Step 1: Enter Your 1k Time
The 1k is scored in minutes and seconds on an indoor rower (Concept2 or equivalent) — lower is better. The calculator also shows your /500 m split, the pace metric rowers use: for a 1k it's simply your total time divided by two (1000 m ÷ 500 m = 2). A 3:28 row is a 1:44 split. It's near-sprint distance, so warm up well; the damper isn't part of the standard, though many pull it around 4–6.
Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards
Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better). At peak age, for men that's roughly Elite ≤2:55, Superior ≤3:03, Advanced ≤3:10, Intermediate ≤3:28; women's marks sit about 30–40 seconds slower for the reasons below.
- Low — Slower than the Intermediate cutoff. Below roughly the median rower — often more about pacing and technique than engine.
- Intermediate — Around the average erg time. Roughly the median; a couple of years of regular rowing.
- Advanced — Faster than most. Roughly the 80th percentile of rowers.
- Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 90th percentile.
- Elite — Top end of the field. Roughly the top 5% of rowers. See the note below on what "Elite" means here.
These cutoffs come from published rowing standards where ability levels map to percentiles (intermediate ≈ median, advanced ≈ 80th, elite ≈ 95th), then adjusted for age.
An Honest Note on the Data — These Are Rowing Standards, Not CrossFit Ones
This is the most important caveat, and it's different from the other benchmarks. Most calculators in this suite are scored against the CrossFit population (either the peer-reviewed study or CrossFit coaching consensus). The 1k row is scored against rowers and erg users — the community standards published by sites like Rowing Level and rowingregimen, built largely on Concept2's enormous logbook. There's simply no CrossFit-population 1k dataset the way there is for Fran or the runs.
What that means for you, honestly:
- The reference population is fitter on the machine. People who log 1k rows are self-selected toward rowers and dedicated erg users, who tend to be more efficient on the machine than an equally-fit general CrossFitter. So you may rank a tier lower here than you do on the CrossFit-calibrated tools — that's the yardstick, not necessarily your fitness.
- Don't compare tier-to-tier with the CrossFit-population calculators. "Advanced" here means "faster than most rowers," which is a tougher bar than "faster than most CrossFitters" would be.
- The data is community/Concept2-based, not peer-reviewed — large and credible, but not a controlled study, and the age curve is borrowed (below).
Why Women's Standards Are Slower Than Men's
Rowing shows a real, non-parity sex gap — men's tiers here are about 30–40 seconds faster at each level. The erg rewards raw power and mass driving the flywheel, plus higher average maximal oxygen uptake and muscle mass, so at equal training men pull faster 1ks (the men’s 1k world record is 2:39.5, the women’s 3:04.9). This is the opposite of Grace or Isabel, where a sex-scaled barbell let women reach parity — here nothing is scaled, so the standards are genuinely sex-split by design.
Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve
Power and aerobic capacity both fade with age. Because the 1k is a mixed effort — part sprint, part engine — the calculator borrows an age curve that sits between the steeper one used for the 500 m sprint and the gentler aerobic one used for the 2k: essentially flat through the mid-30s, then declining to about 0.70 of peak by age 70 (versus ~0.68 for the 500 m and ~0.72 for the 2k).
Concept2 publishes its own age-handicap system for erg rankings, which would be the purpose-built source; this curve is a reasonable stand-in, labeled as borrowed rather than rowing-measured. The peak-age cutoffs come from the rowing/erg standards; only the age shape is approximated.
Why Bodyweight and Height Aren't Used to Set Your Tier
The erg genuinely rewards size — a heavier, more powerful athlete drives the flywheel harder, which is why lightweight and heavyweight rowers are scored separately in competition, and why tall athletes tend to row faster. This calculator doesn't weight- or height-adjust: it uses a single flat standard per sex. So a lighter or shorter athlete may be working relatively harder for the same time than the tiers imply — read your result with that in mind. (Competitive rowing's lightweight standards are a separate scale we don't model here.)
The Cards
- Your Time & Tier — your 1k time and /500 m split, your tier, and how much you'd need to trim to reach the next one.
- Rowing Age — the age whose typical 1k time matches yours. Because mixed anaerobic-aerobic power peaks in the mid-20s to mid-30s, a time faster than any age's typical mark reads as "peak-fitness level"; slower times map to an older rowing age.
- Population Comparison — a modeled percentile: roughly what fraction of rowers in your age group you'd be faster than.
Where You Fall
The distribution curve places your time within a modeled, illustrative spread of rowers of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers, with faster times to the right. It's a visual sense of "how rare is this," not a literal census — and remember the population here is rowers/erg users.
Data Sources and Verification
- Community / Concept2-based rowing standards — The tier cutoffs come from published 1000 m standards (Rowing Level, rowingregimen, BoxLife) built largely on Concept2's logbook, where ability levels map to percentiles (intermediate ≈ median, advanced ≈ 80th, elite ≈ 95th).
- Cross-checked across sources — Reported averages (men ≈3:23, women ≈4:02 across all ages) and world records (~2:39.5 / ~3:04.9) agree closely across sources.
- Not the CrossFit study — The 1k row isn't in the peer-reviewed CrossFit benchmark study, so its reference population is rowers, not CrossFitters — the key caveat above.
- Borrowed mixed age curve — A shape between sprint and aerobic decline; Concept2 publishes its own age handicap, which this approximates.
Limitations and Important Caveats
- Rowing population, not CrossFit — the single biggest caveat: you're scored against rowers/erg users, who tend to be more efficient on the machine, so you may rank lower here than on the CrossFit-calibrated tools.
- Community/Concept2 data, not peer-reviewed — large and credible, but not a controlled study, and mapped from ability bands to percentiles.
- The age curve is borrowed — a mixed sprint-aerobic shape standing in for Concept2's own age handicap.
- No size adjustment — heavier and taller athletes have a real erg advantage; the flat per-sex standard doesn't account for it, and competitive lightweight standards aren't modeled.
- Machine and calibration — assumes a Concept2 (or equivalent) properly calibrated; other machines and damper/drag quirks move times.
- The distribution is modeled — the "Where You Fall" curve is illustrative, not a literal census.
