How the Diane Calculator Works

"Diane" is one of CrossFit's original "Girls": a fast couplet of 21-15-9 deadlifts at 225 lb (men) or 155 lb (women) and handstand push-ups, done for time (90 reps total). It pairs a heavy posterior-chain pull with an inverted press — strength and gymnastics skill in one short, intense sprint. You performed the workout, so your time is the measurement; this tool places it into one of five tiers, adjusted for age.

An Honest Note on the Data — Why Diane Is Different

Most calculators in this suite are built on a peer-reviewed study of the CrossFit population, which gives measured percentile thresholds. Diane is not in that study. There's no published percentile dataset for it, so its tiers come instead from community coaching consensus — the round-number targets published by CrossFit.com and coaching sites: elite under 4:00, advanced 4–6 minutes, intermediate 6–9, and a beginner Rx pace of 10–14. We've mapped those onto the five-tier scale (Elite ≤4:00, Superior ≤5:00, Advanced ≤6:00, Intermediate ≤9:00 at peak age).

What that means for you, honestly:

  • Rx Diane is an advanced workout. This is the biggest caveat. The 225/155 lb deadlift is heavy, and handstand push-ups are a genuine gymnastics skill that a large share of even fit CrossFitters can't yet do. So the population that can perform Diane as prescribed is already self-selected toward the capable end — even the "Intermediate" tier here is a competent athlete, not a true beginner. If you scaled the load or the handstand push-ups, your time isn't comparable to these Rx tiers.
  • These are rules of thumb, not measured percentiles. They're coarser and softer than the study-based tiers behind Grace or the runs. Treat them as an approximate guide.
  • Handstand-push-up capacity dominates the time. The deadlifts are heavy but finite; for most athletes the handstand push-ups are the bottleneck, and how many you can string together largely determines your time. A strong presser flies; someone grinding singles will be far slower at the same overall fitness.
  • Don't compare tier-to-tier with the study-based calculators. Grace and the runs use measured percentiles; Diane uses coaching guidance. Being "Advanced" on one isn't equivalent to "Advanced" on another.
  • The percentile, distribution curve, and "conditioning age" are modeled on these community bands — so they're doubly approximate here. Read them as illustrative, not precise.

Step 1: Enter Your Time (Rx Only)

Diane is scored in minutes and seconds — lower is better. The standards assume the Rx version: 225 lb (men) / 155 lb (women) deadlifts and strict handstand push-ups, 21-15-9 of each. Scaling — a lighter bar, pike push-ups, or an abmat under the head — makes the workout faster and easier, so a scaled time won't line up with these tiers. Treat a scaled result as rough.

Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards

Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better):

  • Low — Slower than about 9:00. For an Rx effort, usually the handstand push-ups are the limiter — grinding them in singles stretches the time out.
  • Intermediate — Roughly 6:00–9:00. A capable Rx athlete moving the deadlifts in solid sets and breaking the handstand push-ups into short chunks.
  • Advanced — Roughly 5:00–6:00. Deadlifts in 2–3 quick sets and handstand push-ups in efficient, larger sets.
  • Superior — Roughly 4:00–5:00. Near-unbroken movement with fast transitions and strong pressing stamina.
  • Elite — Under about 4:00. Games-level: deadlifts touch-and-go and handstand push-ups mostly unbroken. See the note below.

These band edges are the widely cited community targets, mapped onto the five-tier scale and then adjusted for age. They are approximate guides, not measured percentile cutoffs.

What "Elite" Means Here — an Honest Caveat

"Elite" here is a coaching rule of thumb — under 4:00 — not a measured top-1% cutoff. The true competitive ceiling is far faster: top CrossFit Games athletes finish Diane in under 2:00, and the fastest documented times are around 1:35 — deadlifts touch-and-go and handstand push-ups nearly unbroken. Sub-4:00 already means big, efficient sets on both movements, which very few recreational athletes manage. For most people who can Rx Diane at all, finishing under about 10 minutes with clean movement is a strong result.

A Note on Men's and Women's Standards

Diane's deadlift is scaled by sex (225 vs 155 lb), but its other movement — the handstand push-up — is bodyweight pressing, and that tends to favor men, who on average carry more relative upper-body strength (the same reason Cindy's push-ups and pull-ups favor men). So at equal overall fitness, a woman's Diane time may run a little slower, driven by the handstand push-ups.

The honest problem: published Diane times aren't split by sex. The community bands are reported as general numbers, and there's no reliable dataset to quantify a male–female gap for this specific workout. Rather than invent an offset, we apply the same bands to both — but flag plainly that a woman clearing a tier here is likely doing relatively harder work on the pressing than a man at the same time. (This differs from Cindy, where sex-split community round counts did exist, so we set a gap there.)

Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve

Diane is a short, intense couplet of heavy pulling and gymnastic pressing — and both strength and power fade with age. Standards are scaled so an older athlete isn't measured against a 30-year-old's time.

The honest part: there's no age-banded Diane data, so the peak-age cutoffs are the community bands above, while the shape of the age decline is borrowed — the same anaerobic/strength decline curve used for Fran and Grace (roughly 1% per year from the mid-30s, accelerating after about 70). It's a defensible stand-in, but both the base cutoffs and the age shape are estimates, not measurement. One Diane-specific wrinkle: handstand push-ups depend on shoulder strength and stability, which can decline unevenly with age and injury history, so individual results vary more than the curve implies.

Why Bodyweight Isn't Used to Set Your Tier

The deadlift load is fixed and scaled by sex, and CrossFit has no weight classes, so the tiers aren't bodyweight-adjusted. Bodyweight does cut both ways here — a lighter athlete presses their own weight more easily on the handstand push-ups, while a heavier, stronger athlete may move the deadlifts faster — but the calculator doesn't try to model that. Your time is the measurement.

The Cards

  • Conditioning Age — the age whose typical Diane time matches yours. Because this capacity peaks in the mid-20s to mid-30s, a time faster than any age's typical mark reads as "peak level"; slower times map to an older conditioning age.
  • Population Comparison — a modeled percentile: roughly what fraction of Rx-capable athletes in your age group you'd be faster than.

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your time within a modeled, illustrative spread of Rx-capable athletes of your age, shaded into the five tiers, with faster times to the right. It's a visual sense of "how rare is this," not a literal population census — and remember the population here is already advanced.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Community coaching consensus — Diane's tier bands come from widely published coaching guidance (CrossFit.com, WODprep, Dr Workout, Non Stop CrossFit): elite <4:00, advanced 4–6, intermediate 6–9, beginner 10–14 minutes, average ~5–9. These are rules of thumb, not a measured percentile distribution.
  • Cross-checked across sources — CrossFit.com's own benchmark guidance and multiple coaching write-ups agree closely on these bands.
  • Not the peer-reviewed study — Unlike Grace and the runs, Diane is not in the CrossFit-population percentile study; this is the main reason its tiers are softer and shouldn't be compared tier-to-tier with those calculators.
  • Masters strength/anaerobic-decline research — The age-adjustment curve is borrowed from established masters aging data.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • Advanced, self-selected population — Rx Diane requires a heavy deadlift and handstand push-ups, so the tiers describe capable athletes; the "Intermediate" band is not a true beginner.
  • Handstand-push-up capacity dominates — for most athletes the HSPU is the bottleneck; how many you can string together largely sets your time, sometimes more than overall fitness.
  • Community bands, not measured percentiles — coaching rules of thumb, coarser than the study-based calculators, not equivalent tier-to-tier.
  • Equal male/female tiers — published times aren't sex-split; the HSPU likely makes Diane relatively harder for women, but there's no data to quantify a gap.
  • Modeled percentile and distribution — the percentile, curve, and conditioning age are illustrative estimates on top of the community bands.
  • Rx assumption — Standards are for 225/155 lb deadlifts and strict handstand push-ups; scaled loads or movements aren't comparable.
