How the Isabel Calculator Works

"Isabel" is one of CrossFit's classic barbell benchmarks: 30 snatches at 135 lb (men) or 95 lb (women), done as fast as possible — a pure barbell sprint with the snatch. It's the snatch-only sister of Grace (30 clean & jerks at the same load), and the conditioning companion to the standalone Snatch calculator: the same lift, now tested for repeated speed under fatigue rather than a single max. You performed the workout, so your time is the measurement; this tool places it into one of five tiers, adjusted for age.

An Honest Note on the Data — Why Isabel Is Different

Most calculators in this suite are built on a peer-reviewed study of the CrossFit population, which gives measured percentile thresholds. Isabel is not in that study. There's no published percentile dataset for it, so its tiers come instead from community coaching consensus — the widely repeated rules of thumb you'll find on sites like WODwell: Elite under 2:00, Advanced 3–4 minutes, Intermediate 4–6, beginner 6–7. We've mapped those onto the same five-tier scale used elsewhere (Elite ≤2:00, Superior ≤3:00, Advanced ≤4:00, Intermediate ≤6:00 at peak age).

What that means for you, honestly:

  • These are rules of thumb, not measured percentiles. They're coarser and softer than the study-based tiers behind Grace or the runs. Treat them as an approximate guide.
  • Don't compare tier-to-tier with Grace. Grace's cutoffs come from a percentile study; Isabel's come from coaching guidance. The two are built on different methods, so being "Advanced" on one isn't equivalent to "Advanced" on the other.
  • The percentile, distribution curve, and "conditioning age" are modeled on these community bands — so they're doubly approximate here. Read them as illustrative, not precise.
  • Male and female tiers are set equal. Isabel is a sex-scaled barbell sprint with no bodyweight movements, and the peer-reviewed Grace data showed women reach essentially the same top times as men in exactly that situation. With no Isabel-specific sex data available, equal tiers is the honest default — but it's an assumption carried over from Grace, not a measurement.

Step 1: Enter Your Time (Rx Only)

Isabel is scored in minutes and seconds — lower is better. The standards assume the Rx (as prescribed) version: 135 lb for men, 95 lb for women, power or squat snatch. A lighter bar produces faster times that aren't comparable, so a scaled time scored here would read as artificially strong. If you scaled the load, treat your result as rough.

Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards

Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better):

  • Low — Slower than about 6:00. Below the community "intermediate" band. Often a sign the Rx load is too heavy to keep the bar moving — scaling down is sensible.
  • Intermediate — Roughly 4:00–6:00. Around where most athletes who Rx Isabel land; the common "aim for 3–5 minutes" target sits here.
  • Advanced — Roughly 3:00–4:00. Fast, efficient barbell cycling with short rests — faster than most.
  • Superior — Roughly 2:00–3:00. Near-continuous cycling; small, quick sets with minimal rest.
  • Elite — Under about 2:00. The community "Elite" rule of thumb — big touch-and-go sets. See the note below.

These band edges are the widely cited community targets, mapped onto the five-tier scale and then adjusted for age. They are approximate guides, not measured percentile cutoffs.

What "Elite" Means Here — an Honest Caveat

"Elite" here is a coaching rule of thumb — under 2:00 — not a measured top-1% cutoff. It means big touch-and-go snatch sets with almost no rest, which very few recreational athletes sustain. The true competitive ceiling is far faster still: the fastest Isabel times are around a minute, and the oft-cited "record" (about 51 seconds, by strongman Eddie Hall) is really a novelty, since at that speed the bar is more heaved than snatched. For nearly everyone, the honest targets are the ones coaches actually give: aim for 3–5 minutes, and treat sub-2:00 as genuinely elite.

Why Men's and Women's Standards Are the Same Here

On most benchmarks men post faster times, but barbell-only sprints scaled by sex are the exception. The peer-reviewed Grace data (30 clean & jerks at the same 135/95 load) showed women reaching essentially the same top times as men — with the bar scaled and no bodyweight movements like pull-ups or running, the playing field is level. Isabel is the same kind of workout, so we apply the same conclusion and set the men's and women's tiers equal. To be clear, this is carried over from Grace by analogy, not measured on Isabel directly — there's no sex-specific Isabel dataset to confirm it.

Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve

Isabel is a short, one-to-four-minute all-out effort, powered largely by high-intensity anaerobic capacity — and that capacity fades with age. Standards are therefore scaled so an older athlete isn't measured against a 30-year-old's time.

The honest part: there's no age-banded Isabel data at all, so the peak-age cutoffs are the community bands described above, while the shape of the age-related decline is borrowed — the same anaerobic-decline curve used for Fran and Grace, drawn from how masters athletes decline in anaerobic and middle-distance events (roughly 1% per year from the mid-30s, accelerating after about 70). Isabel sits physiologically close to that kind of effort, which makes the curve a defensible stand-in — but both the base cutoffs and the age shape are estimates, not measurement.

Why Bodyweight Isn't a Factor

The strength calculators use bodyweight for context; Isabel doesn't use it at all. The load is fixed and already scaled by sex (135/95 lb), the movement is pure barbell with no bodyweight component, and CrossFit has no weight classes. Your time is the whole measurement.

The Cards

  • Your Time & Tier — your Isabel time, your tier, and how much you'd need to trim to reach the next one.
  • Conditioning Age — the age whose typical Isabel time matches yours. Because anaerobic capacity peaks in the mid-20s to mid-30s, a time faster than any age's typical mark reads as "peak-conditioning level"; slower times map to an older conditioning age.
  • Population Comparison — a modeled percentile: roughly what fraction of athletes in your age group you'd be faster than.

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your time within a modeled, illustrative spread of athletes of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers, with faster times to the right. It's a visual sense of "how rare is this," not a literal population census.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Community coaching consensus — Isabel's tier bands come from widely published coaching guidance (WODwell and similar): Elite <2:00, Advanced 3–4, Intermediate 4–6, beginner 6–7 minutes. These are rules of thumb, not a measured percentile distribution.
  • Cross-checked against common targets — The bands line up with the frequently repeated "aim for 3–5 minutes" guidance and reported elite/record times.
  • Not the peer-reviewed study — Unlike Grace and the runs, Isabel is not in the CrossFit-population percentile study; this is the main reason its tiers are softer and shouldn't be compared tier-to-tier with those calculators.
  • Masters anaerobic-decline research — The age-adjustment curve is borrowed from established masters middle-distance and anaerobic aging data.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • Community bands, not measured percentiles — The single biggest caveat: tiers are coaching rules of thumb, coarser and less precise than the study-based calculators, and not equivalent to them tier-to-tier.
  • Modeled percentile and distribution — Because there's no real distribution, the percentile, curve, and conditioning age are illustrative estimates layered on top of the community bands.
  • Equal male/female tiers are an assumption — carried over from Grace's peer-reviewed parity finding, not measured on Isabel.
  • The age curve is borrowed — from masters anaerobic research, not CrossFit athletes directly.
  • Rx assumption — Standards are for the prescribed 135/95 lb snatch; scaled or lighter-load times aren't comparable.
  • Technique-dominated — Isabel rewards snatch skill and bar cycling as much as fitness, and varies with judging strictness and grip; treat comparisons as approximate.
