How the Helen Calculator Works

"Helen" is one of CrossFit's classic mixed-modal benchmarks: 3 rounds of a 400 m run, 21 American kettlebell swings (53/35 lb), and 12 pull-ups, done as fast as possible. This calculator takes your Helen time and compares it to standards drawn from the CrossFit athlete population, adjusted for your sex and age, then places you in one of five tiers. There's no formula here — you performed the workout, so your time is the measurement. Unlike the short barbell sprints Fran and Grace, Helen is a longer, more aerobic effort — the running does much of the work — which changes how it behaves across sexes and ages, as explained below.

Step 1: Enter Your Time (Rx Only)

Helen is scored in minutes and seconds — lower is better. The standards assume the Rx (as prescribed) version: 53 lb (men) / 35 lb (women) American kettlebell swings (swung fully overhead), standard pull-ups, and three genuine 400 m runs. Substituting a rower for the run, a lighter bell, or banded pull-ups produces faster times that aren't comparable to the Rx standards, so a scaled or substituted time scored here would read as artificially strong. If you scaled or substituted, treat your result as rough.

Step 2: Match Your Time to Standards

Your time is compared to age-adjusted cutoffs and assigned to one of five tiers (faster is better):

  • Low — Slower than the Intermediate cutoff. Below roughly the 35th percentile of the CrossFit population.
  • Intermediate — Around the population average. Roughly the 35th–65th percentile.
  • Advanced — Faster than most CrossFit athletes. Roughly the 65th–90th percentile.
  • Superior — Well above average. Roughly the 90th–99th percentile.
  • Elite — Top tier of the sampled population. Roughly the top 1% of the study's athlete sample. See the note below on what "Elite" means here.

The Superior and Elite cutoffs (about the 90th and 99th percentiles) come directly from the source data; the Intermediate and Advanced cutoffs (about the 35th and 65th) are interpolated between published points.

What "Elite" Means Here — an Honest Caveat

The tiers describe a committed-but-recreational CrossFit population — the study's athletes averaged about 32 years old with a few years of training, and the sample was modest (66 men, 96 women). So the "Elite" cutoff is the top ~1% of that sample. For Helen, that bar lands near 6:33 for men and 8:30 for women — which, unlike Fran, already sits close to genuinely competitive territory (a sub-7-minute Helen is a strong regional-level time). Read "Elite" as "very fast for a serious gym, approaching competitive"; the middle tiers are where most recreational athletes will land.

Why Women Are Slower Than Men on Helen

On Grace — 30 clean & jerks with the bar scaled by sex and no bodyweight movements — the study found women reach essentially the same top times as men. Helen is the opposite case, and it's worth understanding why. Helen is built from running and pull-ups alongside the kettlebell swings, and those bodyweight- and aerobic-driven movements aren't fully equalized by scaling the bell. The study measured the gap directly: women completed Helen an average of about 84 seconds slower than men (and ran the 400 m about 25% slower), a wider gap than on Fran and far wider than on Grace's near-parity. So the women's standards here are genuinely slower than the men's — reflecting the workout's running and gymnastic demands, not a scaling quirk.

Why Age Matters — and a Note on the Borrowed Curve

Helen is a longer effort than Fran or Grace — most athletes finish in roughly 7 to 12 minutes — and it's carried substantially by aerobic capacity, since the three 400 m runs dominate the clock (the study found Helen times correlate strongly with 400 m and 1-mile run performance). That capacity fades with age, so standards are scaled to keep the comparison fair across ages.

The honest part: there's no published age-banded Helen data, so the peak-age cutoffs come from the CrossFit-population study, while the shape of the decline is borrowed. Because Helen leans aerobic, the curve here reflects endurance/VO2max aging rather than the pure anaerobic decline used for Fran and Grace — though the practical rate is similar, roughly 1% per year from the mid-30s, accelerating after about 70. It's a borrowed, endurance-flavored model, not Helen-specific measurement.

Why Bodyweight Isn't Used to Set Your Tier

Helen's runs and pull-ups are genuinely bodyweight-sensitive — a lighter athlete usually has an easier time moving their own weight over three 400 m runs and 36 pull-ups. Even so, the tiers here are not bodyweight-adjusted, because CrossFit has no weight classes and the study reports flat thresholds for the whole population. So bodyweight can influence your Helen time, but it doesn't shift the standard you're measured against — everyone is held to the same bar.

  • Conditioning Age — the age whose typical Helen time matches yours. Because anaerobic capacity peaks in the mid-20s to mid-30s, a time faster than any age's typical mark reads as "peak-conditioning level"; slower times map to an older conditioning age.

Where You Fall

The distribution curve places your time within a modeled, illustrative spread of athletes of your sex and age, shaded into the five tiers, with faster times to the right. It's a visual sense of "how rare is this," not a literal population census.

Data Sources and Verification

  • Peer-reviewed CrossFit profile study — Published Helen percentile thresholds for a CrossFit athlete population form the tier cutoffs. The times were self-reported by questionnaire.
  • Beyond the Whiteboard reference values — The study cross-referenced its thresholds against Beyond the Whiteboard's large community dataset, which we use as a consistency check.
  • Independent normative data — A separate 2018 normative study (Mangine et al.) reports median Helen times of about 9.5 minutes for men and 11.1 for women, closely matching this study's medians (about 10:02 and 11:12) — a reassuring cross-check.
  • Masters endurance-decline research — Because Helen is aerobic-leaning, the age-adjustment curve is modeled on established masters endurance/VO2max aging data.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • Rx assumption — Standards are for the prescribed loads and movements; scaled times aren't comparable.
  • Self-reported, modest sample — The tier data comes from a questionnaire study of 162 athletes, cross-checked against community data but not lab-measured. It's most reliable through the central tiers and thinner at the extremes.
  • The age curve is borrowed — drawn from masters endurance/anaerobic research rather than from CrossFit athletes directly.
  • "Elite" is sample-relative — the top of this population, not the top of the sport.
  • Helen varies with equipment and course — kettlebell swing standard (Russian vs full-overhead American), pull-up style, and the run route or terrain all move times; treat comparisons as approximate.
  • The distribution is modeled — the "Where You Fall" curve is illustrative, not a literal census.
