Disclaimer

This calculator covers two US Marine Corps tests: the Physical Fitness Test (PFT) and the Combat Fitness Test (CFT), each scored out of 300. The test structure and standards are current and official, but the per-event point values are modeled to approximate the official scoring tables, so treat scores near a cutoff with care. This is for general information only, not an official score. The events involve maximal effort — warm up fully, and stop immediately if you feel pain. Consult a healthcare provider before maximal fitness testing, especially if you have any heart, joint, or back condition, or have not been training. For official standards, refer to Marine Corps Order 6100.13A.

How This Calculator Works

This calculator covers the two Marine Corps fitness tests. Use the Test dropdown at the top to switch between them:

  • Physical Fitness Test (PFT) — the twice-yearly test of strength, core, and endurance.
  • Combat Fitness Test (CFT) — a combat-focused test of functional, anaerobic fitness.

Both are scored out of 300 (three events, 100 each). For the pull-ups, push-ups, plank, and ammo-can lifts, more is better; for the runs and the maneuver course, a faster time is better. The calculator scores each event in the right direction automatically.

The Physical Fitness Test (PFT)

What Changed: The Plank

The biggest recent change is the core event. The plank was offered as an option from 2020 and became mandatory in January 2023, fully replacing crunches. This calculator reflects that — the core event is the plank, scored on a single gender-neutralThe plank uses the same scoring for everyone, regardless of age or sex — unusual among the events. standard for all Marines.

Step 1: Enter Your Details

  • Sex and age — select the scoring table for the upper-body event and the run.
  • Upper-body event — pull-ups or push-ups (see below).
  • Your result for each of the three events.

The Three Events

  • Upper bodydead-hang pull-upsFull arm extension at the bottom of every rep; overhand or underhand grip allowed. or push-ups. Pull-ups can score the full 100; push-ups are capped at 70, so choosing them caps your whole PFT at 270.
  • Plank — held for time, gender-neutral, roughly 1:10 to pass up to about 3:45 for full points.
  • 3-Mile Run — timed; the fastest young-male bracket maxes at 18:00.

How Scoring Works

Each event is scored from 0 to 100 based on your result, age, and sex. There is a hard rule:

You must score at least 40 on every event — score 39 or less on any one and the whole PFT fails, regardless of total.

Your total then sets your classification:

1st Class — 235+  ·  2nd Class — 200–234  ·  3rd Class — event minimums up to 199

A perfect PFT is 300, but only with pull-ups — push-ups cap the maximum at 270.

How to Read the Standards Table

The table lists one row per age band and shows, for each event, the minimum (40 points) and the maximum (full points). The plank column is the same for every row because it is gender-neutral. Your age row is highlighted, and the table follows your sex and chosen upper-body event.

The Combat Fitness Test (CFT)

The CFT tests combat-relevant, anaerobic fitness across three events, also scored out of 300 with the same 40-per-event rule and the same classification bands:

  • Movement to Contact — an 880-yard sprint, for time.
  • Ammo Can Lifts — a 30-lb ammunition can pressed overhead, maximum reps in 2 minutes.
  • Maneuver Under FireA 300-yard course combining sprints, a buddy drag and carry, ammo-can carries, a grenade throw, and agility movements. — a timed combat course.

Sources, Methodology & Limits

Data Sources

  • Marine Corps Order 6100.13A — the governing order for the PFT and CFT events, scoring, and classification bands.
  • Current Marine fitness references (Military.com, Operation Military Kids, and others) for the plank-mandatory change, the push-up cap, and the per-event anchors.

Things This Tool Does Not Yet Model

  • Combat-arms 2026 standard. From 1 January 2026, female Marines in combat-arms units are scored on the male tables with a 210-point per-event floor, mirroring the move toward common combat standards across the services. From 1 January 2026, female Marines in combat-arms units are scored on the male tables with a 210-point floor. This calculator uses the standard sex-normed tables.
  • Alternate cardio and altitude. The 5,000-meter row is an approved substitute for the run, and both the run and row have altitude-adjusted tables above about 4,500 feet. Neither is modeled here.

Limitations and Important Caveats

  • The structure and standards are current — plank mandatory, push-ups capped at 70, the 40-per-event rule, and the 235 / 200 classification bands.
  • The per-event point curves are modeled to approximate the official tables. Your raw result is converted to points by interpolating between the 40- and 100-point anchors, which tracks the official scaling closely but is not the verbatim MCO 6100.13A table — so a score near a cutoff could differ from an official result. For exact thresholds, use the official order.
  • The CFT figures are ported from prior tables and should be treated as approximate.
  • Single-test snapshot. Warm-up, fatigue, footwear, and the testing surface all affect one trial. Retest under the same conditions to track progress.
