How This Calculator Works
This calculator measures your hand-eye coordination using the Alternate-Hand Wall Toss Test — a simple, low-cost field assessment in which you throw a ball against a wall and catch it with the opposite hand, over and over, for 30 seconds. You enter your number of successful catches, and the calculator classifies that score against a published rating table, then shows how you compare against a young-adult reference distribution.
One thing to keep in mind throughout: for the wall toss, a higher score is better. More clean catches means better coordination, so the tiers, the table, and the distribution curve are all built around higher being better.
Step 1: Enter Your Details
The calculator needs two inputs: your sex and your catch count.
- SexIn the young-adult reference study, men averaged meaningfully more catches than women (28.4 vs 22.2), so the comparison uses sex-specific values. The rating table itself is identical for both sexes. — used only for the young-adult comparison further down. It does not change your rating.
- Successful Catches (30 seconds) — the number of clean opposite-hand catches you completed in the 30-second test. This single number is your score.
The Test Protocol
For your score to mean anything against the reference data, the test has to be performed the standard way:
- Setup: Stand behind a line marked 2 metres (about 6.5 ft) from a smooth, solid wall. Use a tennis ball (the standard object).
- Throw: Using an underarm action, throw the ball against the wall with one hand.
- Catch: Catch the rebound with your opposite hand.
- Alternate: Immediately throw it back with that hand and catch with the other — keep alternating hands for the full 30 seconds.
- Score: Count only clean opposite-hand catches. Drops, or catches made with the same hand that threw, do not count. You can pick up a dropped ball and continue until time runs out.
A few practical points matter for a fair score: take a couple of practice attempts first so the result reflects coordination rather than unfamiliarity, drawing a small target circle on the wall at shoulder height helps keep your throws consistent, and many testers take the best of three trials with a short rest between. The protocol can be modified — a closer 1.5 m line for beginners, a 2.5–3 m line for advanced athletes, shorter durations for youth, or a different ball — but scores are only comparable when the distance, duration, and ball are kept identical between tests.
How Your Rating Is Determined
The widely published wall toss rating scale uses five named ratings based on catches in 30 seconds. Unlike some other tests on this platform, these five published labels map one-to-one onto the site's five-tier colour scale — nothing is split or invented, the original labels are kept as published:
Excellent > 35 · Good 30–35 · Average 20–29 · Fair 15–19 · Poor < 15
Your score is placed in the highest band it reaches:
- Poor — below the typical range. Fewer than 15 catches. A clear starting point; coordination scores improve quickly with regular practice.
- Fair — a little below average. 15–19 catches. Below the middle of the published scale.
- Average — around the middle of the scale. 20–29 catches. Typical of the general active population.
- Good — above average. 30–35 catches. Characteristic of well-coordinated, practised individuals.
- Excellent — the top published band. More than 35 catches. Among the best performers, typical of athletes in catch-and-throw sports.
Why There Is No Age or Sex Adjustment in the Rating
On reps- and time-based tests elsewhere on this platform, the standards shift with your age and sex. The wall toss deliberately does not, and that is an honesty decision rather than an oversight.
The published rating table is a single, all-population scale — one set of cut-offs for everyone. There is no published, peer-reviewed normative dataset that breaks wall toss performance down across the lifespan, so there is no firm basis for building an age curve the way the sprint or agility calculators do. The one credible age signal in the literature is narrow: within young adults aged 18–26, the 21–23 group performs best. That is not enough to model performance at, say, 45 or 65. Rather than invent an age curveFabricating per-age thresholds with no measured data behind them would produce confident-looking numbers that aren't real. This platform names the gap instead of filling it with guesses. from thin air, the calculator reports the published rating as-is and confines any sex-based comparison to the one population where sex-specific data actually exists: young adults.
How to Read the Rating Table
The rating table reproduces the published scale directly, with one row per rating, running Excellent down to Poor. It has three columns:
- Rating — the named band, colour-coded to match the rest of the calculator.
- Score (30 s) — the catch range that earns that rating.
- Athletic PercentileThese descriptors (Top 5%, Top 20%, etc.) come from the published rating table itself. They are broad-population guides and won't perfectly match the young-adult percentile below, which is computed from a different dataset. — the rough share of athletes each band represents, as given by the source table.

Young-Adult Comparison (Percentile)
Below the rating, the calculator estimates your percentile — the share of people you out-scored — using the best modern reference data available: a 2025 study by Naru and colleagues that measured 457 young adults aged 18–26 under the standard 2 m, 30-second, best-of-three protocol. Because the published rating table only gives bands (not a full distribution), this percentile comes from that study's measured mean and spread instead:
Men: mean 28.4 catches (SD 2.8) · Women: mean 22.2 catches (SD 1.9) · Overall: 25.3
A crucial caveat: that study sampled a fairly uniform young-adult group, so its spread is narrow (a standard deviation of only about 2–3 catches). The practical effect is that the percentile moves fast — being just a few catches above the mean can push you toward the 95th–99th percentile. Read the percentile as "compared with healthy young adults aged 18–26", not as a general-population ranking, and treat the exact number as a guide rather than a precise statistic.
Reading the Distribution Curve
The final panel, Where You Fall Among Young Adults, draws a bell curveA normal distribution fitted to the young-adult study's mean and standard deviation for your sex. It is an illustrative model of that sample, not a measured curve of the whole population. of likely scores for your sex, with the five published rating bands shaded across it and a marker showing where your score sits. Higher scores are to the right, so the bands run Poor → Excellent from left to right.
Two things are worth noting when you read it. First, the curve is centred on the young-adult averages above, so depending on your sex some rating bands may sit near or beyond the edge of the visible range — for women in particular, the "Good" and "Excellent" bands fall well out in the right tail, which honestly reflects how demanding those bands are relative to the typical young-adult woman. Second, the shaded bands come from the general rating table while the curve comes from the Naru study; because those are two different sources, the band positions on the curve are approximate rather than an exact fit.
Why Hand-Eye Coordination Matters
The wall toss is a benchmark for hand-eye coordination — your ability to track a moving object with your eyes and direct your hands to intercept it. It also draws on visual tracking, reaction speed, and bilateral (left-right) coordination. These qualities underpin performance in any sport where the hands must respond quickly to a moving ball, including cricket, baseball and softball, tennis and other racquet sports, basketball, netball, volleyball, handball, and combat sports.
Its great strengths are simplicity and cost: it needs only a ball, a wall, a line, and a timer, and it can be self-administered and repeated easily to track progress. Its main weaknesses are equally worth knowing: scores improve rapidly with practice, an occasional lucky catch can inflate a single trial, and the result is sensitive to throwing consistency and the wall surface. It is a useful snapshot of coordination, not a diagnostic test — a low score does not by itself indicate a problem, and should be read alongside vision, practice history, and sporting background.

A note on scope: the classification is the published all-population rating; the percentile and curve are anchored to a single young-adult study and labelled as such. No per-age standards are modelled, because none are published — where the data runs out, the calculator says so rather than estimating past it.
Limitations and Important Caveats
This calculator provides an estimate, not a clinical measurement. Several factors affect how precisely it reflects your true coordination:
- Practice effect. Wall toss scores rise quickly once you get the rhythm. A first-ever attempt usually understates your real ability; take a few practice tosses and retest.
- Luck and throwing consistency. An inconsistent or crooked throw makes the catch harder, and an occasional fluke catch can inflate a single trial. Best-of-three scoring reduces both.
- Setup must match.Distance from the wall, ball type, wall surface, and duration all change the score. The reference data assume 2 m, a tennis ball, and 30 seconds. A closer wall, a different ball, or a different duration changes the score and breaks comparability with the norms.
- Young-adult reference only. The percentile and curve describe people aged 18–26. For children, older adults, or other populations, treat them as rough orientation, not a true ranking.
- Narrow reference spread. The young-adult study's small standard deviation makes the percentile swing sharply with a few catches. It is a guide, not a precise population statistic.
- The distribution curve is modelled. It is a normal approximation fitted to the study's mean and spread, with rating bands from a separate source overlaid — illustrative rather than an exact population.
- Single-test snapshot. Fatigue, warm-up, lighting, and the wall surface all affect one trial. For tracking progress, retest under the same conditions every few weeks.
- One facet of coordination. The wall toss captures hand-eye coordination with a predictable rebound; it does not measure reactive coordination against an unpredictable object, nor footwork or whole-body agility.
